Encephalitis threat looms over Assam

Guwahati, July 21 (ANI): Encephalitis syndrome threat looms large over in Assam, while experts have sounded alert due to significant rise in number of cases reported that have been tested positive. The deadly disease is gradually taking a toll in Guwahati city since the month of June and has resulted in death of four people so far. The deceased includes two adults and two children who were undergoing treatment in the Guwahati Medical College Hospital. Principal of Guwahati Medical College Hospital, Ramen Talukdar said that the patients suffering from the Japanese Encephalitis have been kept under strict observation in the hospital. Patients admitted in the hospital belong to the surrounding districts like Nalbari, Darrang and Goalpara. Around 22 districts of Assam are Encephalitis affected. Jul 21, 2014

Ardent fan in Assam digs out 20- year old whisky bottle on Germany's win in FIFA World Cup

Karbi Anglong, Assam, July 16 (ANI): A delighted northeastern Indian soccer fan dug out his twenty- year- old 'Passport Scotch' whisky bottle to celebrate the victory of Germany in the FIFA World Cup. Putul Bora, 53, had bought this Passport Scotch bottle in 1994 worth rupees 630 from Kolkata. In the same year, he buried the imported Scottish whisky below the ground near his house. He vowed to unearth and unseal the bottle only when Germany, his favourite team, won the soccer finals. Bora had abstained from liquor after Germany lost in 2002. He had vowed that he would only resume drinking whenever his favourite team, Germany, bags the prestigious trophy. Digging out the whisky bottle was a delicate operation as the ground diggers had to be very careful in order to avoid breaking the glass bottle. Jul 16, 2014

Guwahati, July 8 (ANI): The All Assam Students_ Union (AASU) staged a protest in Guwahati city of Assam, opposing any move by the central government to resume construction of hydroelectric project along Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border. The protesters resisted reconstruction of 2,000-MW Lower Subansiri hydroelectric project of the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation at Gerukamukh. India_s power minister, Piyush Goyal, had announced that work on the dam project would resume within a week. Government to consider setting up more agriculture universities in Northeast

Manipur/ Assam/ New Delhi, July 8 (ANI): Union agriculture minister Radha Mohan Singh has directed the Indian Council for Agricultural Research to study the feasibility of opening agriculture and veterinary universities in the northeastern states. A delegation led by Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju met the agriculture minister recently to push forward a proposal for setting up at least six agriculture universities in the North East along with a few research centers at an estimated cost of over Rs 700 crore. The delegation submitted a memorandum highlighting the requirements of the north-eastern region in the areas of agricultural education and research. Shimray Asaiwo Bellrose and 17 others from Northeast clear civil services

Manipur, July 05 (ANI): 30-year-old Shimray Asaiwo Bellrose, a Tangkhul Naga who hails from Lunghar village in Manipur, is proud to have cleared the civil services examination, 2013, conducted by the Union Public Service Commission. She has secured the 1106th position in the final list of the successful candidates. Bellrose has been staying in New Delhi since 2011 after completing her Msc in Botany from Manipur University. Bellrose is among the 18 candidates from the northeast who have cleared the civil services examination. Of the successful candidates, at least six are from Assam, four from Manipur, while two are from Meghalaya. Three candidates are from Mizoram and one each from Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura and Nagaland. Asaiwo believes that continuous disturbance by militant outfits in the northeast prevent the talented youngsters from achieving their potential. Lakhimpur, June 29 (ANI): Lives of over 2000 people living in villages of Lakhimpur district in Assam were affected by floods, which is gradually decreasing after rains lashed through the region for last four days. Despite a reduction in the water level in the Nimati Ghat area in Assam, officials said the water currents are still very strong and prone to electrical hazards. Five districts of Assam were hit by flash floods due to incessant rains on Friday.
