New Delhi, Aug 20 (ANI): Minister of State for Home Affairs, Kiren Rijiju has defended the role of central government with regard to the clashes on the Assam and Nagaland border. He has said that central government will provide all the necessary assistance, but the onus is on the states to resolve the matter. About the firing issue he said that it is not right to blame the centre or Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) because law and order is a state subject. Court orders release of Manipuri activist Irom Sharmila

New Delhi, Aug 19 (ANI): A sessions court in Manipur, Tuesday, ordered the immediate release of civil rights activist Irom Sharmila, who has been on an indefinite hunger strike demanding repeal of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act for the past 13 years. The 42-year-old _Iron Lady_ of Manipur was kept under house arrest following fears that she wants to commit suicide. She is being nose-fed by the state government at a government hospital, which was converted into a jail for her. The Manipuri government had slapped an attempt to suicide case on her. The court said that it is just an allegation that she wants to commit suicide, hence she cannot be kept under arrest and should be released immediately. Sharmila has been on indefinite hunger strike to demand repeal of the Act after killing of 10 civilians allegedly by the Assam Rifles near Imphal airport in November 2000. Aug 19, 2014

Nagaland/Guwahati, Aug 19 (ANI): Situation in Assam-Nagaland border areas remained tense as death toll touched nine, said a senior police official. The affected areas remain tense due to killings in Merapani and Uriamghat of Golaghat district of Assam. Director General of Police (DGP) of Assam Police, Khagen Sharma said that nine dead bodies have been recovered so far. Sharma also inaugurated the Guwahati City police websites to help the public in order to minimize crime and also for lodging immediate complaints. Chief Minister of Assam Tarun Gogoi visited the affected areas on Monday. Floods inundate Kaziranga National Park, forest rangers step up security

Golaghat, Aug 19 (ANI): Forest rangers stepped up safety measures in Assam's Kaziranga National Park in a bid to protect the wild life as flood waters from the Brahmaputra River have inundated almost 80 per cent of its area. The park authorities have strengthened security as poachers take advantage of the floods to kill animals, particularly one-horned rhinos. During the floods, the animals stray outside the park. The rhinos and other animals normally go towards the Karbi Anglong Hills looking for higher grounds. However, District Forest Officer of Kaziranga National Park, S K Sill Sarmah said additional safety corridors have been installed in order to keep a strict vigil and safeguard the wild life. Assamese teenager makes her mark in a Hollywood film

Assam, Aug 16 (ANI): Directed by Oscar winning director Jeffery D Brown, the film 'Sold' has received widespread critical acclaim since it opened at the 5th London Indian Film Festival and won an Audience award. The actor in lead role is Niyar Saikia, a girl hailing from Assam. She has played the role of the main protagonist, Lakshmi, a Nepali girl who becomes a victim of human trafficking. Niyar was selected from among 1,000 girls in Nepal and India who had auditioned for the role and had to participate in a workshop to prepare for the role. The 13-year old actor has been gaining appreciation for her sensitive portrayal of a child trafficking victim in the film. A student of class 9, Niyar has been acting since she was a kid and is currently a drama student at the SEAGULL drama institute.
