RSS leader Indresh Kumar challenges Omar Abdullah to enlist benefits of Article 370

New Delhi, Aug 26 (ANI): Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) challenged the chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir Omar Abdullah to enlist benefits of special status. Article 370 of the Indian Constitution provides special status to the permanent residents of Jammu and Kashmir such as separate citizenship, separate constitution and special property rights. The RSS has demanded repeal of this article, claiming that it encourages secessionist tendencies among a section of the population. Kumar also hit out at Kashmiri separatist leaders for meeting Pakistan High Commissioner in New Delhi ahead of foreign secretary-level talks with Pakistan.

SC refuses to entertain 'premature' petitions against judicial appointment Bill

New Delhi, Aug 25 (ANI): The Supreme Court on Monday refused to entertain petitions challenging the 121st constitutional amendment by which collegium system for appointment of judges in higher judiciary was scrapped and a new mechanism under National Judicial Appointment Commission (NJAC) was proposed to be put in place. The Court said that the bill is yet to receive Presidential assent and become a law of the land.

Sri Lankas Tamil leaders meet Sushma Swaraj

New Delhi, Aug 22 (ANI): A delegation of Sri Lanka’s Tamil National Alliance (TNA) met on Friday (August 22) India’s foreign minister Sushma Swaraj and they would urge New Delhi to ensure devolution of power to provinces in their country. TNA leaders would push their case for full implementation of the thirteenth amendment to the Constitution. They are also expected to call on Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The 13A amendment came into existence due to India -Sri Lanka accord signed in 1987 between then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and then Sri Lankan President JR Jayewardene. It stipulates devolution of powers to the provinces which was centre of ethnic conflict.

New Delhi, Aug 14 (ANI): The Speakers of both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha on Thursday adjourned the respective houses sine die. The budget session which ran for more than a month was adjourned sine die after the announcement by Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan and Rajya Sabha Chairman Hamid Ansari. Earlier in the day, Rajya Sabha passed Constitutional Amendment Bill which went to President Pranab Mukherjee for his assent.

JEC students protest against govt's decision to affiliate college to ASTU

Jorhat, Aug 12 (ANI): Students of an Jorhat Engineering College (JEC) in Jorhat city of Assam staged a protest demanding the state government to take back its decision of affiliating their college to the newly formed Assam Science and Technology University (ASTU). Protesting students said the clauses as given by the government were unacceptable and demanded amendment of the same. Few clauses that were unacceptable by the students were provision of excessive power to the central authority (Chancellor), paid membership in the university, political interference in university's affairs, improper fee structure and decision of affiliating autonomous colleges to ASTU.

Nirbhaya's mother welcomes amendments to Juvenile Justice (JJ) Act, demand retrial of convicted juve

New Delhi, Aug 07 (ANI): The parents of the Delhi gang rape victim welcomed the amendment in the Juvenile Justice (JJ) Act on Thursday. The mother of the victim said that the move will send a right message across and that the Juveniles will be afraid of committing such crimes in the future. Further, she also demanded retrial of the convicted juvenile in the Nirbhaya case. The proposed amendments came against the backdrop of outrage over the lighter punishment of three years in a reform home given to the juvenile convicted in the Delhi gang-rape case.
