Some Iraqi migrants, fed up with the long asylum application process, far-right violence and paltry conditions at temporary shelters in Germany, returned back to Iraq on 27 January. US eases air travel and export financing sanctions on Cuba

The United States announced changes to its sanctions on Cuba, lifting export payment and financing restrictions and facilitating airline travel in Washingtons latest move to ease the US embargo on the island. The amendments, which take effect on 27 January, will remove restrictions on payment and financing terms for authorized exports and re-exports to Cuba of items other than agricultural items or commodities, according to a statement from the Treasury and Commerce Departments. Israels defence minister Moshe Yaalon said on 26 January that Islamic State (Isis) militants had been funded with “Turkish money”, an assertion that could hinder attempts to mend fences between the two countries after years of estrangement. Banksys London Les Miserables mural attacks conditions in Calais camp

A mural by British graffiti artist Banksy highlighting the alleged use of tear gas on refugees from the jungle camp in Calais has appeared on a hoarding near the French embassy in London. The stencilled image mimics the logo of the musical Les Miserables, but in Banksys depiction the character Cosette is engulfed by clouds of gas. Marina Litvinenko calls for ban and imposition of Vladimir Putin

President Vladimir Putin probably approved a Russian intelligence operation to murder ex-KBG agent Alexander Litvinenko, a judge led-British inquiry into the 2006 killing in London concluded on 21 January.
