VHP's 'Himalaya Dhwani' draws ire for morphing Kareena Kapoor's photo for love jihad campaign

Kullu/ New Delhi/ Mumbai, Jan 09 (ANI): Political leaders lashed out at hardline Hindu organisation, Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) after it published morphed photo of Bollywood actress Kareena Kapoor, half of her face covered with burqa, on its magazine for 'love jihad' campaign. The magazine, 'Himalaya Dhwani', brought out by the women wing of VHP published Kapoor's picture, half covered with a burqa with title reading 'Love Jihad-dharamantran se rashtratran' (religious conversion to conversion of nationality) on its cover page. CPI (M) leader Brinda Karat said such elements were gaining strength due to RSS. Bollywood actor Raza Murad said that Kapoor was free to take her life decisions. However, sub-editor of the magazine, Rajini Thukral said that Muslims were trying to convert India into an Islamic country. Jan 9, 2015

Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu calls for positive use of science & technology

Mumbai, Jan 08 (ANI): Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu called upon the scientist community to invest heavily in research and development for the betterment of society. Addressing the concluding session of the 102nd Indian Science Congress in Mumbai, Prabhu underlined the need for developing new technologies but cautioned against their ill-effects also. Science needs to play a pivotal role in the national mainstream, he added. The theme of the Congress was Science and Technology for Human Development. Delivering the valedictory address, Governor of Uttar Pradesh, Ram Naik said the controversy over claims of scientific advances in ancient India was unnecessary. Naik said ancient Indians had made great advances in astrology, mathematics, astronomy, medicine, architecture, physics and chemistry. Mumbai, Jan 08 (ANI): Bollywood Actor Sanjay Dutt on Thursday left for Yerwada jail after his 14 day furlough ended. Dutt had filed for an extension of the furlough the clearance of which is still awaited, said that actor. Dutt was released from the Yerwada jail on 24 December, 2014 as he wanted to bring in the New Year with his family. His initial leave of two weeks ends today. Dutt is serving 42 months of his sentence that started in May 2013, for illegal possession of an AK-56 rifle before the 1993 serial blasts in Mumbai. But, he has repeatedly been released on furlough and parole. The actor was out once to treat his knee, on another occasion to take care of his hospitalised wife and look after his twin toddlers, and now to celebrate New Year. Jan 8, 2015

Indian Coast guard rescues injured Filipino off Goa coast

Goa, Jan 08 (ANI): Indian Coast Guard rescued an injured Philippines national on board a vessel in the Arabian Sea, ten miles off western coast of Goa. The coast guard jumped to action when its Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) in business hub Mumbai received a message from an LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) vessel Mubaraz, which was on her way to UAE from Japan, saying that they had a patient, Alberto Sariano, in critical condition on board. The MRCC then directed the headquarters in Goa to carry out the rescue operation. The Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Indian Coast Guard, Goa region, Manoj Badkar said the coast guard sent out a helicopter to rescue Sariano after the vessel was made to alter its course towards Goa. Sariano was then brought to Vasco da Gama city where he was immediately admitted in a private hospital and given medical treatment. His condition is stable, said Badkar. Jan 8, 2015
