Prince William makes personal plea to save elephants and rhinos from distinction

The Duke of Cambridge has made a passionate appeal for countries to do more to tackle the ivory trade and protected elephants in danger of extinction. Prince William, speaking at Tusks Time For Change event in the London Shard, said that elephants and rhinos could disappear within a generation if more is not done to tackle the illegal ivory trade, thought to be worth an estimated £15bn. Oscar winning writer and director Curtis Hanson has died at the age of 71-years-old in his Hollywood hills home in Los Angeles. Hanson, along with Brian Helgeland, won an Oscar in 1997 for best writing for the movie L.A. Confidential and directed films like 8-mile and The River Wild. Sep 21, 2016

Silverspot butterfly: A new breeding programme to help fight extinction

Oregon Zoo’s butterfly conservation laboratory has released a video showing how it is fighting the extinction of the silverspot butterfly by assisting the endangered species in reproduction. The lab brings in wild butterflies, caught with the assistance of the US Fish and Wildlife Service and US Forest Service, and creates favourable living conditions for the butterflies to lay eggs. Silverspot populations have declined due to habitat loss but the zoo releases about 2,000 butterflies each year. Sep 9, 2016

San Diego Zoo burns $1m worth of illegal rhino horns

To make a stand against animal poaching and wildlife trafficking, San Diego Zoo burnt more than $1m worth of illegal rhino horns on 8 September. In the past storage compounds in other countries have been raided, so zoo staff decided the best way to ensure that the horns do not end up on the black market was to burn them. The ashes from the fire will be spread throughout Africa. The burn comes just before World Rhino Day on 22 September. Sep 9, 2016

Giant pandas are no longer endangered but eastern gorillas are

Thanks to an increase in available habitat, the population of the giant panda rose 17% from 2004 to 2014 and they are no longer considered endangered, and their status has been changed to vulnerable. The eastern gorilla however is now critically endangered. The shocking collapse of Grauer’s gorilla numbers is due to illegal hunting and civil unrest. The change in status means four of six great apes are critically endangered: the eastern gorilla, western gorilla, Bornean orangutan and Sumatran orangutan. Sep 5, 2016
