Real estate sector witnesses a growth in Assam

Guwahati, Dec 10 (ANI): Guwahati city in Assam is a growing hub for trade and commerce activity in the Northeast. And, this has opened up new vistas for the real estate industry. Shopping malls, showrooms, apartments and hotels - the changing face of the city has made it a favorite destination for investors. Real estate developers are venturing in to the city to tap the potential. In recent years, the city, like most of the other bigger cities in the country has witnessed a sharp rise in the demand for flats, both for residential and commercial purpose. A large number of real estate developers, including from abroad, are eying to develop housing and commercial infrastructure in Assam. They participated in a recently concluded four-day long Realty summit. Organized by the Assam Real Estate and Infrastructure Developers' Association (AREIDA), it invited experts from various infrastructure development related fields to discuss wide range of issues. Huge cache of explosives recovered in Assam

Assam, Dec 7 (ANI): India's paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel recovered a huge quantity of explosives from Bokajan town in Assam. The explosives, including 86 packets of gelatin sticks, 30 packets of detonators, and 286 metres of cable wires, were seized from a bus which was coming from Shillong and was heading to Dimapur. The CRPF has arrested the two drivers of the buses and will conduct the further investigation to find out whether any militant outfit was indulged. Assam Police arrest accused in suspected plot to kill Bangladesh PM

Guwahati, Dec 7 (ANI): Assam police arrested a key suspect behind a blast in West Bengal who is also believed to have been involved in a plot to assassinate Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina and stage a coup there. Shahnor Alom, who was arrested in a village in Assam, is an operative of a banned Bangladeshi group active in West Bengal, a senior intelligence officer said. According to a police officer, he was caught hiding in his relative's house in a village in Nalbari district of Assam. Director General of Police for Assam, Khagen Sharma, said Alom had a very good rapport with militant leaders from both West Bengal and Bangladesh. Dec 7, 2014

Northeastern states promote tourism and crafts at IITF-2014 in New Delhi

New Delhi, Dec 07 (ANI): Tourism and industrial promotion was the focus of Assam pavilion at the 34th India International Trade Fair at Pragati Maidan in New Delhi. In tandem with the theme – 'Women Entrepreneurship', the Assam Pavilion showcased various entrepreneurial activities of the women of Assam and highlighted the contributions of those who have made a special mark in their respective fields. The various products put up on display at the Fair were Assam Tea, handloom products, Assamese jewellery, bamboo and cane products and ethnic foot items, most of which are led by women entrepreneurs. A large number of crafts persons and entrepreneurs from other northeastern states like Nagaland, Tripura, Manipur and Meghalaya also participated in the fair. General Secretary of Assam Yuva Parishad, Mon Kashyap threatened of mass revolution if Modi_s government went ahead with the plan. Foodies satiate taste buds at fest in Assam

Guwahati, Dec 05 (ANI): Food lovers throng annual Mongolian Food Festival, which is organised during the winters, in northeastern Assam state. Organised on the banks of River Brahmaputra, the 10-day long food fest in Guwahati city saw visitors enjoying varieties of food prepared by different tribes. People savoured dishes specific to Assam. Most of the tribes in Assam are of Mongolian origin. Some also have their origins in the Tibeto-Burman and South-East Asian regions. The organisers believe the traditions, culture and food practices of Mongolian-origin tribes are diminishing and such kinds of events will help people in promoting their food items. The tribal foods of the northeast were not that popular five to ten years ago but nowadays they have become an attraction among people. Apart from various delicacies, local rice beer was also served at most of the stalls, which is a traditional delicacy of the region. Assam, Dec 04 (ANI): Endowed with rich natural resources and suitable climatic conditions, the Northeast region provides a perfect environment for the cultivation of vegetables and fruits. While it has huge potential in horticulture production, the region has to depend on other states due to lack of good quality seedlings. In a move to be self-reliant, the first of its kind agri hub nursery was inaugurated at the horticulture farm on Assam Agriculture University campus in Jorhat. It has been developed at a cost of Rs. 15 crores financed under the Rashtriya Krishi Vikash Yojana. The nursery will annually produce 48 lakhs seedlings of various vegetables and seasonal flowers. Jorhat, Dec 2 (ANI): The All Assam Student Union (AASU) on Tuesday protested the Indian government's decision to swap territory with Bangladesh in northeast state of Assam. India has inched closer to settling a long-simmering border dispute with Bangladesh, possibly signaling a softer line from Prime Minister Narendra Modi than when he was in the opposition. A parliamentary committee has urged the government to table a constitutional amendment that would pave the way for a land swap deal that Bangladesh and India have been negotiating for years. Assam and West Bengal urge central govt for scheme on protection of Rhinos

Siliguri, Dec 02 (ANI): India's northeastern and eastern states demanded assistance from central government for protection and conservation of rhinoceros. A programme to create awareness on conservation of rhinoceros was organised in West Bengal which was attended by various conservationists including chairman of International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), Doctor Bibhab Kumar Talukdar and Chief Conservator of Forests, Ujjal Bhattacherjee. Urging for a scheme for conservation of dwindling species, IUCN chairman Talukdar said last year 41 rhinoceros were killed in Assam. According to the last Rhino census conducted by the state forest department, there are more than 50 rhinoceros in Garumara National Park and more than 200 in Jaldapara, but the number of this unique species is not increasing. Security beefed up in Assam ahead of PM's visit for DGPs conference

Guwahati, Nov 28 (ANI): Security stepped up ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's meeting with the police chiefs in Assam. Modi and Home Affairs Minister Rajnath Singh will address the two-day meet, which begins on Saturday, and being held in Assam for the first time. Directors general of police (DGPs) and inspectors general of police (IGPs) from the states and union territories, chief ministers of the northeastern states, officials from the Intelligence Bureau (IB) and paramilitary forces will take part in it. Director General of Police Khagen Sarma said all precautionary measures are being taken to prevent any untoward incident. India's northeast consists of eight states which are beset with militancy and insurgency.
