Union Cabinet pays homage to Assam attack victims, Rajnath Singh to visit state

New Delhi, Dec 24 (ANI): Union Cabinet on Wednesday paid homage to victims of attacks at five different places in Assam wherein more than 40 people lost their lives. The cabinet ministers maintained silence for the lost souls and prayed for peace. Home Minister Rajnath Singh along with Minister of State for Home Affairs, Kiren Rijiju announced that they would visit Assam this afternoon to take stock of the situation. Earlier, curfew has been imposed in parts of Assam after the attack by the suspected NDFB (Songbijit) militants. Meanwhile, people staged protest outside of Assam Bhavan in Delhi against the attack and demanded action by the state and central government over the same. Dec 24, 2014

Assam, Dec 24 (ANI): Suspected tribal militants killed at least 40 people, including women and children, in Sonitpur and Kokrajhar districts of Assam. Police suspect militants of the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) were behind four attacks that took place on Tuesday within the space of an hour. Formed in 1998, NDFB signed a ceasefire with the government in May 2005, but some of its factions continue to indulge in militancy. Villagers who fled the carnage told police that the rebels came on foot, armed with assault rifles and wearing military uniforms. They forced open the doors of their thatched huts and opened fire. Chirang, Dec 22 (ANI): Security forces killed two militants and rescued a kidnapped businessman in Assam. Two militants of National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) were killed in gun battle in Assam's Chirang district along Bhutan border.Security forces rescued an abducted trader from the militants. Following a tip-off, a joint team of army and police launched the operation at Chirang reserve forest area. The rescued trader was identified as Sushil Deb. Security forces recovered one M-16 rifle, one AK series rifle, one Insas rifle, two pistols, 552 rounds of live ammunition from the slain militants. Police said that a combing operation was launched by the specially trained commandos of army, paramilitary forces and Assam police against the NDFB militants in the bordering areas of Bhutan. Dibrugarh, Dec 21 (ANI): Four workers of a petrochemical factory, Brahmaputra Cracker and Polymer Limited (BCPL), in Assam died due to suffocation after they went inside a tank filled with nitrogen gas. The incident took place when the workers shouted due to shortage of oxygen while working in the tank. The workers were taken to a nearby hospital where they were declared brought dead. The incident angered thousands of co-workers who vandalised the company’s premises and tried to set it on fire. Police tried to control the situation and resorted to baton charge. He was allegedly the inancial brain of Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) terror group and was arrested by National Investigation Agency (NIA) with the help of central security agencies from Nalbari district of Assam on December 6. SC to monitor deportation of illegal Bangladeshi immigrants

New Delhi, Dec 17 (ANI): The Supreme Court on Wednesday directed a larger bench to hear petitions challenging a constitutional clause which sought to offer Indian citizenship to Bangladeshi immigrants. Several organisations from Assam have petitioned Supreme Court against Section 6A of the Indian Citizenship Act. This section offers Indian citizenship to Bangladeshis who crossed over to Assam till March 25, 1971. Millions of Bangladeshis crossed over to India during the 1971 Liberation War to escape the atrocities by Pakistani troops. The court also decided to personally monitor the Assam Accord signed in 1985 to screen and deport illegal immigrants. The 29-year-old Memorandum of Settlement (MoS) was signed between the then Indian government and the Assam Movement, which was agitating against the undocumented migrations into Assam. A lawyer representing the petitioners, Manish Goswami, hailed the Supreme Court order. Another lawyer Somiran Sharma said the court also asked the Indian government to hold talks with Bangladesh for the smooth deportation of Bangladehi immigrants. Dec 17, 2014

Mobile science laboratory proves to be a boon for rural students in Assam

Assam, Dec 15 (ANI): Dahotia Hr. Secondary School in Jorhat is one of the good educational institutes of Assam. However, it lacks modern and state-of-the art science laboratory. Many a times, the students have to sacrifice with the unavailability of practical facilities. Now, the science students have a reason to cheer as they have got a 'laboratory on wheels', a mobile lab inaugurated by state Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on August 15. Mobile lab on wheels is an initiative of Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan (RMSA), Assam in collaboration with UNICEF and the Assam State Technology and Environment Society. As on now, two mobile vans in Jorhat and Kamrup will cover the schools in rural areas of Upper Assam.
