VW emissions scandal: EU seeks more powers over national car regulations

The European Union sought sweeping powers over national car regulations on 27 January, aiming to prevent a repeat of Volkswagens emissions test cheating scandal and sparking a tough debate as governments and industry resist change. Europes Industry Commissioner Elzbieta Bienkowska said Brussels would be able to order spot checks on vehicles and order recalls under the proposed new rules. Sydney: CCTV captures woman’s close call after car ploughs into a petrol station

A woman is lucky to have escaped being seriously injured or killed after a car smashed into a petrol station on 16 January. Surveillance camera footage shows the car ploughing through the front glass wall of the service station shop in the Sydney south west suburb of Belfield, where Catherine Crawford can be seen walking towards the counter.
