Indian Army arrests 11 tribal guerillas in Assam

Chirang, Jan 20 (ANI): Indian Army arrested 11 militants of banned National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) in Assam and recovered huge cache of arms and ammunition from their possession. Militants were apprehended on specific intelligence inputs from the Panbari forest area of Chirang district. Two pistols, two improvised explosive devices (IED) and nine detonators among other arms and ammunition were recovered from the rebels. NDFB is fighting for a separate homeland for indigenous Bodo tribesmen claiming that the tea-growing state has been flooded with outsiders. India has intensified army operations to hunt down tribal militants in Assam after rebels killed at least 80 people last December, the deadliest in the remote area in years. Jan 20, 2015

Allahabad/Varanasi, Jan 16 (ANI): Devout Hindus in India converged on the banks of holy River Ganges on Wednesday to take holy dip to mark harvest festival, ‘Makar Sankranti’. The festival marks the arrival of spring. Large number of devotees gathered in Allahabad and Varanasi cities of Uttar Pradesh to take a dip in River Ganges. The pilgrims camp by the riverside and in the evening they decorate the entire riverbank with earthen oil lamps. The harvest festival is called Lohri in northern India, Pongal in southern Tamil Nadu state and parts of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, whereas in Assam, it is celebrated as Bihu and in the rest of India, it is celebrated as Makar Sankranti. HS Bramha assume charge as Chief Election Commissioner

New Delhi, Jan 16 (ANI): HS Bramha took over as India's new Chief Election Commissioner today. He is succeeding VS Sampath, who demitted office yesterday after nearly six years in the post. Brahma is presently the senior most of the two Election Commissioners. A 1975 batch IAS officer of the Andhra Pradesh cadre, Bramha hails from Assam. Huge cache of ammunition recovered from police constable in Assam

Guwahati, Jan 13 (ANI): Police recovered huge cache of ammunition, including a grenade, from a police constable in Guwahati city of Assam. The constable was detained at Guwahati railway station while trying to transport the ammunition to neighbouring state of Bihar. Police officer, Sisir Bhatta said that the arrested constable is a cadre of the Meghalaya Police. Rai, in his defence said that he did not intend to give the bullets to anyone. Reportedly, Guwahati police has sought help from Meghalaya Police in order to proceed with the investigation. Guwahati, Jan 12 (ANI): North-eastern state of Assam gears up to celebrate harvest festival, traditionally known in the local language as Magh Bihu or Bhogali Bihu, falling on January 15. In the run-up to the festival, which is celebrated with great fervour in the state, a non-profit organisation held an exhibition to welcome the festival. Mouthwatering delicacies like ‘pitha’ or pancakes and many other traditional food items, prepared by local women, were up for sale in various stalls at the exhibition. The festival of Bihu marks three distinct phases of the farming calendar for the native crop of the state-paddy. Kokrajhar, Jan 11 (ANI): Self-styled platoon commander of tribal militant group National Democratic Front of Bodoland (Sonobijit) was killed in an encounter with joint team of police and armed border force in Assam. Identified as Jwblang, he was involved in the December 23 attack on Pakhriguri village in Assam in which five tribal people were also killed. Last month over 80 people were killed in militant attacks in different districts of the northeastern state. Police believe that a faction of the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB), was behind coordinated attacks on tea plantation workers and their families. Police believe that a faction of the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB), fighting for a separate state for ethnic Bodos, was behind coordinated attacks on tea plantation workers and their families in Assam. Sub-divisional police officer, Kokrajhar district, Ankur Jain said that seven militants were arrested of (NDFB). Alipurduar, Jan 06 (ANI): Police in West Bengal produced two militants in court after speculations of their possible links to guerilla attacks, which left at least 80 dead last month in Assam, surfaced. The two suspects belonging to the tribal militant group National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) were nabbed late Sunday evening from a bus stop in Alipurduar district of West Bengal, which borders Assam. Police said the two suspects were produced in the court from where they were taken back to Assam on transit remand. According to Jaswal, the suspects identified as Ganga Basamatari (29) and Sajid Narjenari (21), both residents of Assam, were trying to escape through West Bengal after the Indian army declared Operation All Out' to reportedly flush out militants belonging to the NDFB. Army intensifies operation to hunt down tribal guerillas in Assam

Kokrajhar, Jan 04 (ANI): Combing operations against the tribal militant group National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) are going on in full swing along India-Bhutan border in Kokrajhar and Chirang districts of Assam. Army, police and paramilitary forces under the unified command structure are carrying out joint operations in the strong hold areas of tribal guerillas in the forest terrain. The massive patrolling along the India-Bhutan border areas has been intensified while the army is searching out militants hidden deep inside the Ripu and Chirang reserve forests in Kokrajhar and Aie-Valley division in Chirang district. The border in the two districts has also been sealed by the security forces as NDFB militants could sneak through border areas.
