India, Bangladesh border talks kick off in Tripura

Agartala, Feb 04 (ANI): India, Bangladesh joint district-level border conference to resolve trans-border issues kicked off in Tripura. A wide range of issues like smuggling, trans-border crime, insurgent movement, narcotics, human trafficking was discussed between officials of both the countries. Both the sides expressed satisfaction and said dialogue not only helps in mutually sorting disputes at grass-root level but also helps in confidence building between the nations. Officials of both sides maintained that frequent dialogue should take place at regular intervals as it helps in better coordination and improving ties. Issues related to four districts of Bangladesh and Tripura would be tabled on last day of two-day talks. Similar conferences would also be held in Assam and Meghalaya to sort out border issues. The bomb, which exploded near a police station, was planted in a shop in the busy market of the town. Police has launched an investigation in the incident. Road accident kills six in Assam

Sonitpur, Jan 31 (ANI): Six persons were killed in a road accident in Sonitpur district of Assam on Saturday. The collision was between a bus and a car carrying a marriage party on the National Highway 15. The marriage party was on their way from the wedding 200 kilometers away, to the groom's house. While four people, including the married couple died on the spot, two others died after being brought to a nearby hospital. The car was totalled. Two suspected Kuki militants killed, three others injured in encounter in Imphal

Imphal, Jan 29 (ANI): Two suspected Kuki National Front (KNF) militants were killed and three others were injured in a gun battle between 8 Assam Rifles and the militants at Kadangband in Imphal. The security personnel were on high alert following a series of attacks by insurgents during the Republic day celebrations. Sources said the occupants of a jeep fired indiscriminately during a routine check at Kadangband. The security forces retaliated leading to the death of two insurgents on the spot. The three injured persons have been identified as Helen Kuki (30), Satmamang Kuki (23) and Thangkholin Kuki (25). All the three injured suspected KNF cadres are undergoing treatment at the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences, informed a source. One NDFB(S) militant arrested by Bengaluru police, interrogation underway: MN Reddi

Bengaluru, Jan 27 (ANI): The police in Bengaluru arrested another wanted militant belonging to the notorious tribal militant outfit, National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB). The ultra has been identified as Sanju Bordoloi alias Shibigiri. NDFB is a militant group which has been fighting for a separate state for ethnic Bodos in Assam. Bengaluru Police Commissioner MN Reddi said that Bordoloi was nabbed following specific tip-off. Reddi further said that Bordoloi was being questioned about his associates - if any- in the city. He is wanted in two cases by the Assam police and in a case by the National Investigation Agency (NIA). Bordoloi fled Assam after coordinated attacks on tea plantation workers and their families in the last week of December 2014. At least 80 people were killed in the massacre. Police recover IED in Assam on Republic Day

Jorhat/ Imphal, Jan 26 (ANI): Police officials recovered an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) and later demolished it in Assam on Monday (January 26), on the occasion of country’s 66th Republic Day. Police said they recovered the bomb from the boundary wall of a refinery godown in Jorhat city. The IED weighing two kilogram was wrapped in black polythene bag. Later, the Bomb Disposal Squad of Assam Police detonated the bomb. Earlier in the day low intensity blasts rocked Imphal city in Manipur. Police personnel were deployed at key locations in Imphal leading towards the venue of Republic Day celebrations. Bengaluru Police Commissioner MN Reddi said that the militant was arrested police with the help from Assam intelligence. He added that the militant is an active member of a terrorist cell and had participated in the recent massacre in Assam. He further said that the militant will be handed over to the Assam police. Guwahati, Jan 24 (ANI): Assam tightened security across all its districts ahead of 66th Republic Day. In a sign of growing warmth between the two nations, US President Barack Obama will be the chief guest at this year's Republic Day glitzy parade which showcases country's military might and rich heritage. The preparation for Republic Day, which is celebrated on January 26, is in full swing. Participants including men in uniform and school students carried out rehearsals in dusty ground, while the state is under security blanket and CCTV cameras have been installed in and around the parade ground. Security personnel are carrying out regular checks at railway platforms, tracks and also conducting frisking of vehicles and commuters on road in Guwahati city. Jadav Payeng develops 1,400 acres of forest area in Assam

Assam, Jan 22 (ANI): Situated along the Brahmaputra River, Jorhat district of Assam is home to the largest river island on earth, Majuli. Located along with a number of barren sandbars, the area was once heavily eroded due to frequent floods. However, with the individual effort of Jadav Payeng, there is now 1,400 acres of lush forest in the area. Since 1979, Payeng has been single-handedly planting and nurturing various species of trees, including vast expanses of bamboo groves. The vast forest is now home to a variety of wildlife species including the endangered Royal Bengal Tiger and a number of migratory birds. Payeng lives in a small hut in the forest along with his family and survives by selling milk. His work has received much appreciation across the country and he was named as the 'Forest Man of India' by the Jawaharlal Nehru University. Police arrest man for smuggling endangered lizards in Assam

Guwahati, Jan 21 (ANI): Police in Assam arrested a man from a railway station in Guwahati city for trying to smuggle 15 gecko lizards. The man identified as Sanjay Rai was trying to smuggle the endangered species to West Bengal, police officials said. He told officials he had caught the geckos from Kumarghat in Tripura and was taking them to Siliguri. Geckos have large international market value and they are transported to China from northeastern states via Nepal.
