Northeast region emerges as a potential investment destination

Guwahati, Feb 20 (ANI): A steady decline in insurgency has given a boost to trade and commerce activities in the Northeast region. Recently, several Medium, Micro and Small industries from the northeastern region as well as from other states and neighbouring countries have come together to showcase their products at the ongoing 22nd Guwahati International Trade Fair. The fair organized by the Industries and Trade Fair Association of Assam in association with National Small Industries Corporation Limited (NSIC), was inaugurated by Union Cabinet Minister of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, Kalraj Mishra in the presence of several dignitaries including Bangladesh High commissioner. The Union Minister attended the inaugural session of the Northeast MSME Conclave at the Indian Institute of Entrepreneurship and highlighted the various initiatives undertaken by the centre for promoting entrepreneurship in the MSME sector in the region. Students in Guwahati protest against outsiders writing exams for government jobs

Guwahati, Feb 15 (ANI): Police in Guwahati city detained hundreds of activists on Sunday protesting against students from outside writing exams for recruitment in government jobs. The protest was organised by a powerful students organization, the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU). Police in large numbers stopped the protesters from preventing students from appearing in exams held for the recruitment in railway police. The AASU has for long been demanding justice for the people of Assam and northeast besides demanding quota for jobs. There have been media reports that not even a single person from the northeast was recruited during the drive for filling up posts of 1,000 sub-inspectors and 17,000 constables in earlier exams. Over 250 players, including boys and girls from different districts took part in the event. The tournament was organized by the Kick Boxing Training School, Sekta, under the aegis of the Kick Boxing Association of Manipur. Sepon, Feb 13 (ANI): Two persons were killed in a grenade attack by suspected separatists in Assam on Friday (February 13). The incident happened in Sepon town, about 400 kilometres from Guwahati, the main city of Assam. Eyewitnesses said two cycle-borne militants hurled grenade at the house of a businessman. Bikers rally to create awareness on Rhino poaching in Assam

Guwahati, Feb 09 (ANI): Motorcyclists rode through streets of Guwahati in Assam to create awareness about endangered one-horned rhinoceros, typical to the region in the country. The bike rally, organised by Royal Enfield and a club Rhino Riders, saw participation of 50 enthusiasts who wore T-shirts with messages, 'Rhinos will live', and waved flags. A participant from Rhino Riders, Siddhartha Bhattacharya, said that it was important for citizens to know about the rampant killings of the animal. Atleast 13 killed in an accident in Assam

Golaghat, Feb 09 (ANI): At least 13 people were killed in a major road accident in Golaghat district of Assam, when a vehicle carrying 15 passengers rammed into a stationary truck loaded with iron rods. The impact of the accident was so severe that 12 people died on the spot, while another victim succumbed to injuries on way to hospital. Most of the passengers sitting in the front of the vehicle were disfigured beyond recognition. Two survivors, who suffered injuries, were rushed to Jorhat Medical College and Hospital. The accident occurred on NH 37, when the passenger vehicle was coming from Dhakuakhana in Dhemaji district. Imphal: Three BSF jawans injured in twin IED blasts

Imphal, Feb 08 (ANI): Three Border Security Force (BSF) jawans including one Sub-Inspector and two constables were injured in twin IED blasts that took place at Napetpali village in Imphal. The injured were rushed to the RIMS Emergency Service for medical aid. After the explosion, the security forces, BSF, Assam Rifles and State Police Commando team investigated the locality and nabbed six suspected youths from the area for further verification. Guwahati, Feb 07 (ANI): Water Resources Minister Uma Bharati said that better flood management system would be brought into place in Assam which suffers huge losses due to floods every year. Assam, comprising of the Brahmaputra Valley and the Barack river valleys, is prone to natural disasters with annual floods and frequent mild earthquakes. Speaking at the third Assam Water Resource Conference in Guwahati, Bharati called for judicial usage of available water resources for the development of the state. The two-day conference was inaugurated by Bharati along with Minister of State in Prime Minister's Office (PMO), Dr Jitendra and Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi. Guwahati, Feb 04 (ANI): The Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS), a peasant organization based in Assam, on Wednesday staged a protest against the Bharatiya Janata Party, expressing its disapproval towards the 'vision document' printed by the party for the upcoming Delhi assembly elections, which referred to people hailing from the North-East as ' immigrants'. Akhil Gogoi, General Secretary of the KMSS led the protest with hundreds of supporters following him, carrying banners which read 'Modi ji, change your mindset' and 'We oppose BJP's vision NE people as foreigners'. Earlier in the day, BJP on Wednesday expressed regret for the alleged typing error in the 'vision document' for the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections, which resulted in the referring of the people hailing from the North-East as ' immigrants '.
