Indian Army successfully test fires supersonic missile at low altitude

Balasore, June 19 (ANI): The Indian Army successfully test fired the supersonic Akash missile at very low altitude off the eastern Indian coast. The supersonic missile intercepted the very small unmanned fast moving Banshee aerial vehicle at 30 m altitude above sea level proving the system capability against subsonic cruise missile. With this flight trial, Indian Army accomplishes all the validation trials on the first off production models and the system is being delivered for induction. The Akash Mobile Air Defence Weapon System has been designed, developed and led to production by Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) for defending and protecting the important assets of the country from penetrating aerial attacks. India successfully test- fires Prithvi Defence Vehicle

The missile has been developed by India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). The organization called the test-fire a significant step. This came as a significant milestone in the direction of developing a two layered Ballistic Missile Defence system and the mission aims to engage the targets in the exo-atmosphere region at an altitude of more than 120 kilometres. Both PDV interceptor and the two stage target equipped with motors have been developed to achieve PDV mission. The target further developed to mimic a “hostile Ballistic Missile approaching from more than 2000 km away” was launched from a ship in the Bay of Bengal. Apr 28, 2014
