Rajnath Singh meets Bangladesh official ahead of home secretary level talks

New Delhi, Feb 17 (ANI): Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday (February 17) met Bangladesh's Senior Secretary of Home Affairs, Md. Mozammel Haque Khan in New Delhi ahead of Home Secretary level talks between the two countries. Khan will meet India's new Home Secretary LC Goyal later in the day to hold talks on issues like cross-border movements of people and goods, border cooperation in counter-terror initiatives. India's links with Bangladesh are civilisational, cultural, social and economic. On February 14, Singh had visited border areas of Tripura to review the progress of fencing work. India is fencing its border with Bangladesh. The two countries share a 4,096 kilometre long border, largely porous. Feb 17, 2015

New Delhi, Feb 17 (ANI): Sri Lankan Health Minister, Rajitha Senaratne, on Tuesday called on Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju on the delegation’s visit to strengthen bilateral ties. Senaratne and Rijiju shook hands and exchanged gifts as they were accompanied by delegations of both sides in New Delhi. As per reports, Senaratne had met his Indian counterpart Jagat Prakash Nadda on Monday discussed issues regarding cooperation between the two neighbours in the health sector. The Sri Lankan delegation arrived in India on Sunday along with President Maithripala Sirisena, on his first state visit after he was elected by a landslide in January. Feb 17, 2015

Indian citizens to get e-passports by 2016

Coimbatore, Feb 17 (ANI): In a bid to rein in the number of fake passports, Indian government is working on to issue electronic passports or e-passports to the citizens by 2016, an official said in Coimbatore city. An e-passport will have a chip on its back cover with the holder's biometric details stored in it. In the initial phase which began in 2014, the government had issued 10 million e-passports, out of which majority were issued by Indian embassies abroad. From this year, the government is planning to introduce e-passport service across the country in 72 Passport Kendra Service (PSK). E-passports might be able to fully check the number of fake passports but it will certainly bring it down, said Swaminathan. Feb 17, 2015

President Mukherjee hosts banquet for his Sri Lankan counterpart

New Delhi, Feb 17 (ANI): President Pranab Mukherjee hosted a banquet for his Sri Lankan counterpart, Maithripala Sirisena in New Delhi. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, his predecessor Manmohan Singh and other senior leaders attended the event in the presidential palace, Rashtrapati Bhawan. The two neighbours had signed a nuclear energy agreement earlier. This deal is India's first breakthrough with the new government of the tiny Indian Ocean island where China has been building ports and highways in a diplomatic push in recent years. Under the deal, India will help Sri Lanka build its nuclear energy infrastructure, including training of personnel, the Indian foreign ministry said. Earlier in the day, Health Minister JP Nadda met his Sri Lankan counterpart, Rajitha Senaratne, and discussed health related issues. Feb 17, 2015
