SC issues notice to government over selection of vigilance commissioner

New Delhi, Aug 04 (ANI): Supreme Court of India issued notice to central government on Monday on a petition seeking more transparency in the selection of Chief Vigilance Commissioner. A PIL was filed by the government of BJP for public integrity in view of appointment of PJ Thomas as Central Vigilance Commissioner after which the apex court laid a set of guidelines and directions for vigilance body selections. Senior advocate, Prashant Bhushan, reiterated court_s judgment saying matter will be heard after four weeks. Bhushan also added the ruling government has failed to abide by the directions of Supreme Court issued two years ago and also, the latest guidelines of the central government are not in conformity with the court_s judgment. The petition filed demanded a complete transparency within the selection manner and also emphasised upon the need of more precise directions by the Supreme Court. Aug 4, 2014

Shakti Mill gangrape case: JJB convicts two minors, sends them to correction homes

Mumbai, July 16 (ANI): The juvenile justice board (JJB) convicted two minors for the gang rape of a photojournalist and a telephone operator in Mumbai and sent them to a reform centre for three years. Both the gang rapes took place inside Shakti Mills compound which is abandoned textile mill. Special Public Prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam, confirmed the judgment of the Juvenile Justice Board in Mumbai. 2008 Bangalore serial blasts accused Madani released on bail

Bangalore, July 15 (ANI): 2008 Bangalore serial blasts prime accused Abdul Nasser Madani was released from jail on Monday on health grounds. He was later taken to a private hospital in Whitefield, where he is likely to stay for a month under police security. Madani was, on July 11, granted one-month bail by the Supreme Court while taking note that he is an under-trial prisoner who was already behind the bars for the last four years and was suffering from various ailments, including diabetes and vision-threatening ailment in both eyes. Madani_s family along with his supporters and fans had come to receive him at Bangalore Central Jail. Reportedly, the accused, through his lawyer Prashant Bhushan, had said it will be difficult for him to undergo any surgeries while staying in jail.When asked how he felt after being granted bail, Madani thanked the god for court_s judgment. Jaipur, July 3 (ANI): Women Rights Activist, Kavita Srivastava reacted against the Supreme Court ruling on the Anti Dowry Law. She stated that the decision, which restrained the police of all states from "automatically" arresting the accused in dowry harassment cases on the grounds of misuse, was a terrible judgment. She argued that this ruling meant the end of all arrests and subsequently the end of criminal law.
