Bhopal /New Delhi/Lucknow, Ayodhya /Jammu, Sept 25 (ANI): Devotees across India thronged the temples on the first day of Navratri when Hindus worship mother goddess Durga in all her manifestations. Navratri, derived from the ancient Sanskrit words 'nine nights', falls this year from September 25 to October 03. People stood in queues early morning on Thursday as they visited temples to seek the blessings of mother goddess Durga. Devotees celebrate the festival with religious fervour as they pray before the idol of the goddess, sing religious songs and perform aarti while observing fast. During one of the biggest Hindu festival celebrated across India in different forms and names, temples are beautifully decorated with flowers, leaves, petals, lights and the priests ornate idols of goddess Durga with new clothes and jewellery. Meanwhile, a priest at a temple in New Delhi said on the first day of the festival the goddess Durga is worshipped in the form of Shailputri or daughter of king of mountains. Sep 25, 2014

Politicos react after SC cancels 214 coal block allocation

New Delhi, Sept 24 (ANI): Politicos reacted on Wednesday after the Supreme Court cancelled allocations of 214 coal blocks out of 218 which were allotted to various companies since 1993 and gave them a time period of six months to wind up the business. BJP leader Subramanian Swamy said that SC has taken a very major step towards eliminating corruption in the country. CPI leader D Raja said that the SC has taken a strong view considering the huge loss of the country. SC issues strict guidelines on police encounter cases, says magisterial probe would be carried out

New Delhi, Sep 23 (ANI): In a landmark judgment, the Supreme Court on Tuesday issued strict guidelines on police encounters which mandates filing of FIR in all such cases. The SC said that if an encounter leads to a death then FIR must be filed and a magisterial probe under Sec 176 of Criminal Procedure Code carried out. The probe be handled by the state CID or a separate police station. The court has also directed that they will also have to surrender weapons and ammunition after the encounter. Further, unlike earlier when the encounter lead to awards, the court verdict also bars awarding of gallantry awards or promotion to policemen involved in encounters until the probe gets over. Former MP Mahant Avaidyanath passes away after prolonged illness

Gorakhpur, Sep 13 (ANI): Former MP Mahant Avaidyanath, who had been at the forefront of the Ram Temple movement in Ayodhya, passed away in Gorakhpur city of Uttar Pradesh, after battling a prolonged illness for the past few months. Avaidyanath, guru of BJP MP Yogi Adityanath, took his last breath Friday night. He was admitted to the Medanta Hospital in Gurgaon and brought back to Gorakhpur on Friday evening. Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the passing away of Avaidyanath. He tweeted saying, "Saddened over the demise of Mahant Avaidyanath ji. Oscar Pistorius found guilty of culpable homicide in girlfriend's murder

South Africa, Sept 12 (ANI): Paralympic runner Oscar Pistorius has been found guilty of culpable homicide, after being cleared of murdering Reeva Steenkamp on Valentine's Day last year. Reading from her written judgment, the judge told the court that there was not enough evidence to prove beyond reasonable doubt that the athlete was guilty of premeditated murder or murder. He was also found guilty on one firearms charge, but acquitted on two others. Pistorius could face up to 15 years in jail on the culpable homicide charge. Sep 12, 2014
