Scientists capture the spread and evolution of bacteria
Scientists from Harvard Medical School and Technion-Israel Institute of Technology have produced a visualisation of bacteria evolving, spreading and quickly adapting to become resistant to antibiotics. Over an 11-day period, a giant petri dish with varying levels of antibiotics was exposed to Escherichia coli aka E.coli. The E.coli bacteria became increasingly resistant to the antibiotics, mutating at each stage of the varying concentration levels of the drugs to eventually become resistant to 1,000 times the normal level.
