The Supreme Court on Monday ordered a psychological examination of Justice CS Karnan by a team of doctors on May 5. The medical board in Kolkata will be required to submit its report to the apex court on or before May 8.
The SC directed the director general of police in West Bengal to constitute a team of police officials who would assist the medical board while they examine Karnan. The apex court also asked Justice Karnan to file his response if he wished to. the court would assume that he has nothing to say if he decides not to file his response.
Justice Karnan had directed the Air Control Authority to ban seven Supreme Court judges, including Chief Justice of India (CJI) JS Kehar, from going abroad till the contempt order issued against him by the CJI was disposed of. He had said that if they were allowed to travel abroad, there were chances of the "virus of caste discrimination spreading."
Justice Karnan had also deferred the hearing of his case against the judges of the apex court. Earlier this month, he had directed them to appear before him on Friday, April 28.
The seven judges had issued a suo motu contempt order against Karnan in February this year after he had named 20 "corrupt judges" in January and sought a probe against them to curb "high corruption" in the Indian judiciary.
