The Calcutta High Court on Thursday rejected former West Bengal Transport Minister and Saradha scam accused Madan Mitra's bail plea.
The HC had on Tuesday deferred the hearing into Mitra's plea seeking cancellation of his bail that was granted by a lower court on 31 October.
A division bench of Justice Nishita Mhatre and Tapas Mukherjee had adjourned the hearing till Wednesday after Mitra's advocate failed to file an affidavit opposing the prosecution plea.
The CBI counsel had pleaded the HC to cancel Mitra's bail, claiming that the bail granted by the lower court was illegally passed. After the CBI filed a plea against Mitra's bail, the HC ordered house confinement for him till the disposal of the matter.
The CBI had arrested Mitra on 12 December on the charges of cheating, conspiracy and criminal breach of trust.
Mitra resigned from the post of transport minister on Wednesday. According to IANS report, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee accepted his resignation and forwarded it to Governor KN Tripathi.
His resignation came after the CBI told the court that Mitra was did not step down from his post despite being indicted and jailed in the multi-crore-rupee scam.
