Former Assam Director General of Police Shankar Barua, who was recently interrogated by Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with the multi-crore Saradha chit fund scam, has apparently committed suicide at his home in Guwahati.
Barua, 90, reportedly shot himself dead with his revolver after returning from hospital on Wednesday, police said. He was admitted to hospital and was there for the past four days.
Last month, CBI had raided his house and also checked his bank accounts. Consequently, Barua reportedly succumbed to the pressure and humiliation of investigation and accusation in the scam.
"He could not handle the humiliation of the CBI interrogation," NDTV cited statement from sources close to his family.
CBI has registered 48 cases in the scam involving Saradha Group that left lakhs of investors bankrupt while three of them committed suicide.
