Sania Mirza played some quality tennis in the women's doubles circuit in 2015 as she won an incredible 10 titles, including two grand slams – Wimbledon and the US Open. Sania also finished the year as the world number one player in doubles.
Sania, who started the year partnering American Bethanie Mattek-Sands, got off to a blistering start as they won the Sydney International in January. However, Sydney International just proved to be a glimpse of what was to come ahead for the Indian star, who decided to partner with Swiss star Martina Hingis, which started her terrific journey in the WTA circuit as she began to win titles one after the other.
Instantly, there was a deep found chemistry on the court as the Indo-Swiss pair started to dazzle in the women's circuit right from the start. With Sania playing aggressive tennis from the back court, Hingis used her soft hands at the net to make a perfect combination. Hingis, with her experience and calmness, was an ideal fit for Saina.
It was such lethal combo, which helped them win titles such as Indian Wells, Miami Open and Family Circle Cup before winning their first grand slam as a pair – Wimbledon. Apart from their combination, it was their cool approach, which helped them win a number of titles. The pair was seen giggling even when they made some errors during the game, which established that they were enjoying their game on the court.
The Indo-Swiss pair followed their first grand slam title with another impressive performance in the US Open, which they won defeating Elena Vesnina and Ekaterina Makarova.
Sania and Hingis stood tall in the circuit when they were tested by fellow competitors and took their game to the next level. After winning two grand slams, there was an air of confidence in their display on the court as they won Guangzhou International Women's Open, Wuhan Open and China Open during September and October.
Sania, alongside Hingis, wrapped off the brilliant year with another thumping win in the WTA Finals in Singapore.
With Sania and Hingis having achieved so much in their first year together as a pair, there will be huge pressure on the pair to come up with a repeat performance in 2016 as well. If the pair continues to enjoy the game the way they did in 2015, Sania and Hingis will be eyeing some more grand slam titles along with other titles and finish the year as the best doubles team in 2016 as well.
