World's top smartphone maker Samsung launched the much anticipated smartphone of the year, Galaxy S4, in New York City on Thursday.
The new smartphone made headlines for its innovative smart camera features like Smart Scroll, Smart Pause, gesture feature like 'Air View' and touch free feature S Voice Drive.
Rival HTC's 5.0-inch Butterfly recently made its way into the Indian markets less than a couple of months ago. Critics had appreciated the smartphone's super LCD 3 screen, but it was evenly panned for its exorbitant price of more than ₹45,000.
With Galaxy S4 expected to fall in the similar price range of around ₹45,000, will the prospective high-end smartphone consumers go for HTC Butterfly or just wait until the Galaxy S4 release?
Brief comparison between Samsung Galaxy S4 and HTC Butterfly:
Display:
In terms of display, Samsung's Galaxy S4 and HTC Butterfly stand even this aspect as both smartphones sport 5.0-inch screens with similar 441 pixels per inch resolution.
Galaxy S4 comes with Full HD Super AMOLED display with Gorilla Glass 3 protective shield, while HTC Butterfly sports a super LCD 3 Full HD display with Gorilla Glass 2.
Processor:
Samsung's international variant packs the company's in-house built Octa-core Exynos 5 chipset with two quad-core processors - one with 1.6GHz and other with 1.2GHz CPU speeds.
Even though HTC Butterfly packs a powerful 1.5GHz snapdragon S4 quad-core processor, Galaxy S4's Octa-core processor beats HTC Butterfly's quad-core smartphone in terms of efficiency.
(Galaxy S4's 1.9GHz quad-core processor variant is expected to sell in the US and select markets only)
Camera:
HTC Butterfly sports a standard 8.0-megapixel main camera LED flash with BSI sensor and a 2.0-megapixel front camera like any other high-end smartphone in the market. Samsung's Galaxy S4 stands above its rival with a 13.0-megapxel main camera and 2.0-mega front camera. The increase in megapixel count doesn't make a much of a difference, but the smart camera features, such as Smart Scroll and Smart Pause which eliminate finger-touch for browsing, is a game changer in this aspect.
Users need not even move their fingers on the screen to scroll through a text message; thanks to smart camera feature. Galaxy S4's 2.0-megapixel front camera will track your facial movements to scroll through an email text or browse internet. Also, if a video is being played and the user looks away in other direction, the smartphone automatically pauses the video and continues right away where it had paused when the user turns his attention back to the screen.
Mobile Operating System:
Again, both Galaxy S4 and HTC Butterfly stand even in this field as the smartphones run on Android mobile OS. The only difference is Galaxy S4 is expected to run on latest Android OS version 4.2.2 whereas Butterfly runs on the Android v4.1.2 Jelly Bean OS.
In terms of RAM, network speed connectivity and other minor specs, Galaxy S4 and HTC Butterfly both pack similar features with minor differences.
