South Korean technology giant Samsung has extended the company's global smartphone market share over its rivals, thanks to a record unit of shipments in the third quarter this year.
According to market watch dog IDC's (International Data Corporation) research statics, Samsung shipped close to a staggering 81.2 million smartphone units, more than the combined shipments of its four nearest rivals in the market. With record sales, Samsung has tightened the grip over the 'top smartphone maker' crown, making it even harder for its competitors to a take a shot at the leader.
Archrivals Apple, despite an increase in iPhone sales this quarter, finds their company market share reduced to 13.1-percent this year, compared to last year's 14.4-percent. For now, the Cupertino firm has to settle for second position in the list.
Meanwhile, Chinese vendors Huawei (4.8 percent) and Lenovo (4.7 percent), placed third and fourth respectively, have also made strides in the market with more than 75 percent year-over-year increase in growth. The significant growth of these two firms is attributed to the increased sales of cheap Android smartphones in China. This factor is also expected to strengthen local rivals - Coolpad and ZTE - to make it to the top 5 chart in the next quarter, said IDC.
Samsung's South Korean counterpart LG, despite posting 72 percent growth in smartphone shipments, has slipped to fifth slot in the chart, with just 4.6 percent market share. The company was positioned at three in the second quarter.
With holiday season fast approaching, the market research firm says that the smartphone shipments may very well cross the 1 billion mark, by the year end.
In terms of total mobile phone shipments (including feature phones and smartphones), Samsung continues to lead the pack with a total market share of 24 percent, whereas the former leader, Nokia (13.8 percent), placed second, suffered a negative (-22.1 percent) year-to-year growth with the decline of feature-phones sales across the world.
Apple (7.2 percent) and LG (3.6 percent) hold third and fourth slots in the chart. Huawei pips local counterpart ZTE to capture the fifth position with 3.1 percent market share.
