It looks like Samsung Electronics is gearing up to release its upcoming flagship smartphone dubbed as Galaxy S6 even before the Galaxy S5 completes its one year cycle. The exact release date of the next generation device is not known yet but reports are doing the rounds that it would come in February.
Samsung has the tradition of releasing the successor of its flagship device after it completes one year in the market but it seems to be making an exception for the Galaxy S6 if reports have anything to go by. The fact is Galaxy S5 was released in April this year, and releasing its successor in February would mean that it will arrive early by two months.
The reason for Samsung's move to push Galaxy S6 for an early release is not known but it looks like the company is trying to boost its business and presence in the smartphone market about the Galaxy S5 failed to live up to the expectations. The current flagship smartphone was released without significant changes from the Galaxy S4 albeit some feature upgrades, which disappointed many fans of the Galaxy series.
Samsung's earnings in the third quarter of 2014 was below the expectations with the profits from its mobile division falling 73.9 percent to 1.75 trillion won ($1.6 billion), which is the worst performance the company has faced since the second quarter of 2011.
Now, reports are doing the rounds that the South Korean electronics giant is planning to bring a drastic revamp to its upcoming smartphone with an aim to compete with its arch-rivals like Apple iPhone 6.
The Galaxy S6 is currently in its early stages of development and is codenamed "Project Zero," SamMobile had earlier reported citing sources. "Our sources report that Samsung is probably developing its next-generation flagship device from scratch, with an entirely new vision, hence the codename."
The codename "Project Zero" has caused curiosity among gadget lovers as it is very different from the ones Samsung had used in the past like Project J for the Galaxy S4, Project K for the Galaxy S5, Project H for the Galaxy Note 3, and Project T for the Galaxy Note 4.
A report by Chinese publication, Sina, which was translated by G For Games, has claimed that Samsung Galaxy S6 could be made mostly out of metal and that the company was looking to strike a deal with companies like Foxconn, Pegatron and Winstron, which are loyal to Apple Inc., to manufacture metal casings.
