World's top smartphone maker Samsung has unveiled a less expensive phablet Galaxy Grand as an alternative to the company's flagship Galaxy Note series. Galaxy Grand made its India debut only a couple of months ago and created itself a niche market of affordable big smartphones.
Soon after Galaxy Grand's entry, the Indian manufacturers such as Micromax, Karbonn, Lava and others joined the big-screen smartphone brand wagon and flooded the market with low-cost smartphones with prices less than almost the half the cost of Galaxy Grand.
Xolo, a subsidiary of Lava, a couple of weeks ago, launched the company's first quad-core smartphone Xolo Q800 with a CPU speed of 1.2GHz for ₹12,499 making it the one of the cheapest big-screen smartphones in the current Indian market.
Since the Xolo Q800's price is significantly less than that of the Samsung Galaxy Grand, it remains to be seen what the Indian consumer would go for, an internationally acclaimed brand Samsung or an emerging Indian company Xolo?
Here is brief description of comparison between Samsung Galaxy Grand and Xolo Q800:
Display
With 5.0-inch display, Samsung Galaxy Grand sports a very low 480x800p display resolution with pixel density of around 187 ppi (pixels per inch) whereas the 4.5-inch Xolo Q800 sports a pretty decent QHD display of 960x540p resolutions with a pixel density of 245 ppi.
Processor
Galaxy Grand packs a 1.2 GHz dual-core processor whereas Q800 sports a faster and efficient quad-core Cortex A7 MT6589 chipset with 1.2GHz CPU speed.
Camera
Both Galaxy Grand and Xolo Q800 pack 8.0-megapixel main camera with flash support and capable of HD video recording and they also sport a VGA front camera with 1-megapixel difference between the smartphones.
Mobile Operating System
In terms of mobile operating system, Galaxy Grand and Xolo Q800 stand even in this department as they both run on Android mobile operating system.
Both Samsung's Galaxy Grand and Xolo Q800 run on Android Jelly Bean OS, but the only difference is their OS update versions and that's negligible as users won't feel any disadvantage as each update comes with minor improvement in features.
In aspects of internal hardware components such as Graphics Processing Unit, Memory, RAM, and in terms of network connectivity, all high-end smartphones have minor dissimilarities; Galaxy Grand and Xolo Q800 are no different either.
With a price tag of ₹12,499, Xolo Q800 costs almost ₹8500 less than Samsung's Galaxy Grand. But the question still lingers: Which one will the Indian consumer buy -- a branded Samsung Galaxy Grand or an Indian made Xolo Q800?
