The IDC survey revealed that South Korean electronics major Samsung made record shipments of more than 250 million units for the year 2012, more than double the shipment record of 114 million in 2011.

Samsung's rival Apple came second with total shipments close to 219 million devices. Chinese electronics manufacturer Lenovo was placed third with 78.3 million devices, thanks to 23.7 million smartphone shipments, up from 3.7 million shipments last year.

Despite PC makers HP and Dell finishing fourth and fifth, respectively, both have lost some foothold in the global market mainly due to the declining demand for desktop PCs and laptops worldwide.
