Superstar Aamir Khan's "PK", which is the last big release of 2014, was expected to beat the first-day record of Shahrukh Khan's "Happy New Year" and become the biggest opener of the year, but the film has failed to make it to top of the list.
Bollywood began the year with the release of "Mr Joe B Carvalho" and it churned out over 50 films in the first quarter. Several big-ticket films such as "Dedh Ishqiya", "Jai Ho", "Gulaab Gang", "Shaadi Ke Side Effects", "Gunday", "Ragini MMS 2" and a few other films hit the screens during this period.
But only two movies - "Jai Ho" and "Gunday" - were able to cross the ₹10-crore mark at the Indian box office on their opening days. The Salman Khan-starrer was the biggest opener in the first quarter.
"2 States" and "Ek Villain" were two biggest openers at the domestic box office in the second quarter of the year. Although "Holiday" and "Humshakals" were able to cross ₹10 crore mark on their opening days, their collections were not up to the expected mark.
The industry released some of the biggest openers in the third quarter of the year. "Kick", "Singham Returns" and "Bang Bang" have got record-breaking openings at the Indian box office during this period.
Released at the beginning of the fourth quarter, Shah Rukh Khan's Diwali offering "Happy New Year" collected ₹44.97 crore at the domestic box office on the first day. The movie has not only become the biggest opener of the year, but also the biggest opener of all time.
"PK" is another big-ticket release in this quarter. Considering its hype and promotions, the Aamir-starrer was expected to smash the record of "Happy New Year" on its opening day. But it has landed in the fourth place with its first-day collection at ₹ 26.63 crore.
