Actor R Madhavan's latest outing "Saala Khadoos", which was released in Tamil as "Irudhi Suttru", has shown massive growth at the Indian box office on Saturday.
"Saala Khadoos", one of the most awaited movies of 2016, has been made on a medium budget and had a good amount of hype and promotion before its release. The film was released on a limited number of screens, and had an average advance booking. Many from the industry were sceptic about its prospects at the box office as it would clash with "Mastizaade" and "Airlift".
"Saala Khadoos" released in 575 screens across the domestic market, while "Irudhi Suttru" hit 327 cinema halls on 29 January. The Sudha Kongara-directed sports drama had a focused release spread across 902 cinemas in India. Both versions were released on 215 screens in international markets.
As predicted, "Saala Khadoos" and "Irudhi Suttru" opened to an average response on Friday. But the occupancy of the Tamil version was slightly better than that of the Hindi version. "Saala Khadoos" collected Rs 1.28 crore nett at the Indian box office on its first day, while its Tamil version raked in Rs 91 lakh. They collected a total of Rs 2.19 crore together in the domestic mark on the opening day.
Both movies received positive talk from the audience and the word of mouth took their business upward on Saturday. "Saala Khadoos" showed over 80% growth and collected Rs 2.09 crore nett at the Indian box office on Saturday. "Irudhi Suttru" also witnessed around 60% growth and raked in Rs 1.45 crore nett at the box office on the second day.
"Saala Khadoos" and "Irudhi Suttru" have collected Rs 5.73 crore nett at the domestic box office in two days. Bollywood trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted: "#SaalaKhadoos [Hindi] Fri 1.28 cr, Sat 2.09 cr. Total: ₹ 3.37 cr. [Tamil] Fri 91 L, Sat 1.45 cr. Total: ₹ 2.36 cr. Grand total: ₹ 5.73 cr. (sic)"
R Madhavan's last outing, "Tanu Weds Manu Returns", which was the first blockbuster of 2015, gave him the biggest opener for a solo film. The movie had collected Rs 8.85 crore nett on the first day and Rs 13.20 crore on the second day. The two-day collection of his latest movie is lower than the opening day collection of his last outing. As per early trends, the movie is likely to show huge growth on Sunday.
