Akshay Kumar's "Rustom" got a bigger opening and made better collection than Hrithik Roshan's "Mohenjo Daro" at the Indian box office on the first day.

"Mohenjo Daro" is one of the most expensive Bollywood movies of 2016. Producers Siddharth Roy Kapur and Sunita Gowariker, who have produced the film under the banner UTV Motion Pictures and AGPPL, shelled out Rs. 115 crore on its production and promotion. The movie earned Rs. 45 crore from its satellite rights.
The story and promos of "Mohenjo Daro" had created a lot of curiosity about the film before its release. This hype helped the movie register decent advance booking. The epic adventure-romance film was released in over 2,500 screens across the domestic market on Aug. 12. Considering the hype, the movie was expected to get a bigger opening than "Rustom."

The Hrithik Roshan and Pooja Hegde-starrer registered an average of 40 percent occupancy in domestic market in the morning and matinee shows. The film has got mixed reviews from viewers and critics, and the word-of-mouth opinion took its business slightly upwards in the afternoon and evening shows. The movie fared better in south India than in the northern region.
"Mohenjo Daro" collected approximately Rs. 8.87 crore net at the Indian box office on the first day. It has failed to beat the records of "Agneepath," "Krrish 3" and "Bang Bang" and has become the fourth biggest opener for Hrithik Roshan. Taran Adarsh tweeted: "#MohenjoDaro Fri ₹ 8.87 cr. India biz... Will need to show solid growth to leave a mark!"
"Rustom" was surrounded by similar pre-release hype and promotion. Its story, which is inspired from a real incident, had created a lot of curiosity among film-goers. The film was released in over 2,300 theatres in the domestic market on Aug. 12. It had recorded more advance booking than "Mohenjo Daro."
"Rustom" registered an average of 50 percent occupancy in the domestic market in the morning shows and positive reviews boosted its business in the later shows. The Tinu Suresh Desai-directed crime-mystery has fared well in Mumbai, Dehli and other parts of the northern circuit.
"Rustom" is estimated to have collected Rs. 14.11 crore at the Indian box office on the first day. Taran Adarsh â€tweeted: "#Rustom starts with a bang... Leads by a big margin... Emerges 4th highest opener of 2016... Fri ₹ 14.11 cr. India biz."
"Rustom" has smashed the opening day record of Akshay Kumar's 2016 release "Airlift," which collected Rs. 12.35 crore at the Indian box office on the first day. But it has failed to beat his other release of the year "Housefull 3," which collected Rs. 15.21 crore in the domestic market on its opening day.
