After another mediocre season, the management of Royal Challengers Bangalore has lost patience and has sacked head coach Daniel Vettori (New Zealand), batting and fielding coach Trent Woodhill (Australia), and bowling coach Andrew McDonald (Australia).
However, Ashish Nehra, who joined as bowling mentor last season, has kept his job and seems to have the backing of captain Virat Kohli. Also, Gary Kirsten, who joined as batting mentor is safe for the time being and is the prime candidate to get the job of head coach next season.
Results played a massive factor
The wholesale changes were warranted after Royal Challengers Bangalore encountered another miserable season as they finished with only six wins in the 14 league matches and had finished sixth. They failed to even qualify for the playoffs.
They were even worse in the previous year as they managed to win only two matches and finished last in the table. Vettori has been the coach for the last five years and the results have never been overwhelming, barring the 2016 season when an inspired Virat Kohli led them to the finals only to lose to Sunrisers Hyderabad.
As per the report in Bangalore Mirror, the management will announce the next set of coaches, but it will have the inputs of Kohli as the captain wants to be in charge of affairs and turn around the fortunes of the franchise.
Hence, Gary Kirsten, the world cup winning coach with India in 2011, is the favourite to take over the mantle as he has the trust of the skipper and shares a good bond with him.
However, current Indian batting coach and former coach of Kings XI Punjab, Sanjay Bangar is also primed to take up the job.
