Weeks after sharing the same side of the court at the inaugural Laver Cup, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal are resuming their celebrated rivalry in Shanghai. The top-seeded tennis stars will face each other in the final of Shanghai Masters on Sunday, October 15.
Federer and Nadal are going head-to-head for the 38th time in their careers and for the fourth time in what has been a satisfying year for tennis fans. The 31-year-old Spaniard leads 23-14, but the Swiss great has dominated their meetings this year.
While both the big names have won two Grand Slams each in the ongoing season, the world number one has not been able to get past his nemesis despite the glorious run of the form he has enjoyed.
Federer got off the mark by edging past Nadal in a five-setter in the final of Australian Open after which he defeated his arch-rival at Indian Wells and Miami Masters.
However, Nadal has a solid chance to down Federer on Sunday, given his run of form on hard courts in the last few weeks. The numero uno has stitched a 16-match unbeaten run, which saw him winning the US Open and China Open crowns. In Shanghai, the 16-time Grand Slam champion has outclassed the likes of Grigor Dimitrov and Marin Cilic enroute to his third successive hard court final.
Federer has usually enjoyed a lot of success on hardcourts, but he needs to be at his best against Nadal, who seems to have adjusted quite well to the fast-paced nature of the courts. Despite all the hype around the match, the 36-year-old, winner of 19 major titles, maintained he is not affected by nerves.
"No sense of urgency or panic. You can tell we have been there many, many times before. He's a great champ and he's definitely one of the guys that makes me a better player. He made me rework my game and go back to the practice courts and think about what I could change," Federer said after his 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 win over Juan Martin del Potro in the semi-final on Saturday.
He added: "The way we both play, play so very different from one another, and also the attitude, the way we go through our lives, it's all very different in some ways," said Federer, a crowd favourite in Shanghai. But we have a similar mindset in the big moments, I came to realise that when we played doubles [together recently at the Laver Cup]."
Milestones in sight
Nadal is looking to win his 31st Masters 1000 title. A win on Sunday will put him one ahead of Novak Djokovic's tally of 30.
Nadal is also eyeing to seal the year-end world number spot. A win today will give him a 2760-point lead over world number Federer.
Federer is eyeing his fifth straight win over Nadal, a streak which began in Basel 2015.
Federer, the 2014 champion, will be playing his third final in Shanghai and 143rd overall.
