Shailene Woodley seems to have attracted the wrath of “Twilight” fans after she labeled the romance between Bella and Edward “toxic,” in addition to saying that the characters have an unhealthy relationship.
Bella and Edward are portrayed by Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson in the vampire movie franchise, and they have amassed a loyal fan following since the first installment of the movie came out in 2008.
Woodley, who seems to be riding high on the popularity of her upcoming fantasy fiction, Divergent, told Teen Vogue during an interview that the Bella-Edward romance is sending out the wrong message to youngsters.
"Twilight, I'm sorry, it is about a very unhealthy, toxic relationship. She (Bella) falls in love with this guy (Edward) and the second he leaves her, her life is over and she's going to kill herself! What message are we sending to young people? That is not going to help this world evolve," she told Teen Vogue magazine, according to Entertainmentwise.
These comments have not gone down well with “Twilight” fans, who took to their social networking sites to express their disappointment.
A number of them wrote that Woodley should not take the on-screen romance between Pattinson and Stewart seriously as the film is based on vampire fiction and anything is possible in this genre.
A section of fans also noted that because Woodley's “Divergent” falls in the same genre as "Twilight," she should not hurt the sentiments of die-hard “Twilight” fans, as the audience for both the films are somewhat the same.
Meanwhile, it is too soon to say if Woodley’s comments could prove to be detrimental to her career as well as to the film.
“Twilight” actors Stewart and Pattinson have not reacted to Woodley’s comments.
