The much-talked about Indian athlete in the track and field, Tintu Luka could not impress in the women's 800m event on Wednesday. The athlete, with a timing of 2:00:58 finished in sixth place and failed to reach the semi-finals of the event as well.
In a field comprising world-class athletes such as Margaret Wambui, Gudaf Tsegay, Selina Buchel, among others, it was always going to be tough for the Indian to finish in the top two to directly qualify for the next round.
Buchel was the fastest in the third heat, with 1:59:00, and Wambui (1:59:66) finished second.
Luka might have started the race brilliantly, taking a quick lead in the first 100m. She enjoyed good lead for the entire first lap comprising 400m.
But, Luka's strategy of taking early lead on did not look impressive in the second lap, as she began to slow down and other athletes like Buchel and Wambui came from behind and easily overtook her with around 200m to go. In the last 100m or so, other runners also got past her, and Luka finished a disappointing sixth.
