Despite its prohibition under the Dowry Prohibition Act, 1962, many ask for and accept dowry in different parts of India.
Now, a girl from Thrissur in Kerala has become a star on social media for cancelling her wedding after the groom's family demanded money and gold as dowry from her parents.
"To all those who're asking about my wedding date, I am calling off this marriage as the groom's family demanded 50 pavan gold and five lakh rupees after the engagement, even though they initially said they want only me. As I don't want to buy a man and a family who don't honour their word I've decided to call off this wedding, (sic)" Remya Ramachandran posted on her Facebook page on 3 December.
The courageous act of Remya is being applauded by many social media users, including celebrity couple Aashiq Abu and Rima Kallingal.
"Remya Ramachandran .. You Midukki! You are a Shero:) You decide your destiny. You decide how people should treat you. You decide if you want to live with your head held high. Hope you inspire all the girls out there to stand up, speak up and be heard. ‪#‎saynotodowry‬ (sic)," Rima has written on her Facebook page.

After getting overwhelming support from all quarters, Remya has also thanked everyone for backing her, and requested people not to use her post for "personalised humiliation".
Dear friends,
Thanks for your huge support. I'm overwhelmed. I juz wanted to let my circle know about cancellation of marriage, never expected this to be a break. Meanwhile I would like to explain that it was my declaration of a decision. Never had an intention to hurt anyone specifically. Please dont use my post for personalized humiliation ,instead use it against our social norms.
People are ignorant for their own convenience and profit .
Thank you once again
