Honda Motorcycles and Scooter India (HMSI), whose sales are driven by scooters, now commands 59 market share in the segment. HMSI has a significant lead over its rivals Hero MotorCorp and TVS Motor Company, which currently have 17 percent and 14 percent share respectively, in the scooter segment.
HMSI is ahead of its rivals mainly due to higher sales of its Activa range, reports Financial Express. HMSI sold 7.97 lakh units, up 28 percent year-on-year, in the quarter ended June 2016. In April and May, Activa sales rose 30 percent to 4.71 lakh units on a year-on-year basis.
The Activa dethroned the Hero Splendor range as the largest-selling two-wheeler in the country earlier this year. Since then, the Indian arm of the Japanese automobile company has maintained its lead for six months in a row. The Splendor range was the best seller for the past 17 years.
HMSI had also pipped Hero MotoCorp in scooter exports in the last financial year. It shipped 1.03 lakh scooters, up 32.68 percent from exports in 2014-15. In the process, HMSI overtook Hero MotoCorp that managed to export 77,521 units in 2015-16, despite a being a 3-percent drop.
Honda Activa, a household name in the scooter market, added a new feather to its cap by breaching the 1-crore-mark last year. It is the only scooter that has crossed the magic number in the country so far.
