Tempers flew as thousands of migrants scrambled to cross over the border to Austria from Slovenia on Friday (30 October). Austrian police said around 7,000 people were gathered at the border area after Slovenia began transporting large groups of migrants there by train.
Some people jostled as they tried to push past barriers into Austria, with small fist fights occurring amid the commotion. The Austrian police and army tried to control the situation, urging people to remain calm. Some migrants ignored the authorities call to stop pushing and climbed over the fence.
Police said thousands more were expected to arrive throughout the course of the day. Austrian authorities continued to transport people away from the area in buses and trains to other parts of Austria and on towards Germany.
