Manchester United on Sunday beat Chelsea 3-2 at the Stamford Bridge for the first time in 10 years but it was marred by controversial decisions of the match officials, including the decisive goal that appeared to be an offside.
Chelsea played with nine men almost the entire second half after Branislav Ivanovic and Fernando Torres were shown red cards by referee Mark Clattenburg just a few minutes after the break. As if that's not enough, they allowed the winning goal by Javier Hernandez in the 75th minute though he seemed to be in offside position.
Manchester United went ahead 2-0 just a few minutes into the game, thanks to David Luiz's own goal, and Robin van Persie's goal from Antonio Valencia's pass. However, Chelsea fought back brilliantly with Juan Mata converting a free kick into a goal just before halftime.
Chelsea found an equalizer in Ramires' header in the 53 minutes. But their excitement didn't last long as Branislav Ivanovic and Fernando Torres were sent off just a few minutes into the second half. Ivanovic was shown red card for bringing down Ashley Young and referee Clattenburg showed second yellow card to Torres for diving though it was clear that he had contact with Jonny Evans.
Javier Hernandez, who seems to be in offside position, scored the decisive goal for Manchester United.
Chelsea is till on top of the table with 22 points in spite of the defeat on Sunday but Manchester United has added three more points with the win. They are now second in the table with 21 points.
Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo is visibly not happy with the decisions of the match officials and took a potshot at Sir Alex Ferguson for his comment that Torres deserved the second yellow card.
"It's quite obvious in the eyes of everybody that the second yellow for Fernando wasn't one, it was a foul for us, he should have booked Evans and the decisive goal was offside. It's a shame the game has to be decided in that manner by the officials. Whatever [Ferguson] says, it was a foul in our favour and Fernando put the ball between Evans's legs, was through and was kicked on the shin and went down. It's a foul and a booking for the other player, not for our player," Chelsea official site quoted Di Matteo as saying.
"We're massively disappointed that these key decisions were wrong it always seems to be in favour of the opposition and it's a massive disadvantage for us. At 2-2 we looked like the team that was probably going to win the game so it's a shame. It was a good game of football with two good teams and the officials ruined it," he added.
