After signing attacking stars in Gareth Bale and James Rodriguez in the last two summer transfer windows, Real Madrid have set their sights on Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero.
One "Galactico" a summer, at least, is the Florentino Perez mantra, and according to Spanish newspaper AS, Aguero has been identified as the player to sign this summer.
Aguero has been linked with a move to Real Madrid for quite a while now, with not a single summer going by without reports of interest from the Bernabeu.
No move has materialised as yet, with the situation complicated by the fact that Manchester City have absolutely no plans of letting the striker, who finished top of the Premier League goalscoring charts last season, go in this transfer window, or indeed in the foreseeable future.
City are not a team that need to sell their best players, so the only chance of Real Madrid being able to complete the transfer this summer is if Aguero himself asks to leave the Etihad Stadium.
Real Madrid will also need to sell a few players – Karim Benzema might choose to leave if Aguero is coming in – to balance the books, according to the same report.
So far, there have been no signs of Aguero wanting to move on, with the Argentina international locked in Manchester until 2019. Aguero has also previously said he will leave Manchester City only after helping them to the Champions League title, which, going by their form in the competition, could take a while.
The prolific striker, who could have the same kind of impact that Luis Suarez had when he made his move to Barcelona from Liverpool last summer, was asked about a potential move away from Manchester City, and his reply was on expected lines. "I'm very happy at City," he said.
It will take an astronomical bid – not beyond Real Madrid, of course – and a sudden change of heart from the player – happened quite a few times in the past with other stars – for the Spanish giants to sign Aguero from Manchester City. But for the moment, at least, this looks like a non-starter.
