Ratan Tata, the Chairman Emeritus of Tata Sons, has invested in a United States-based medical emergency startup, MUrgency. According to an official statement released by MUrgency on Tuesday, Tata wanted the global firm to launch its operations in India before taking its services overseas, the Press Trust of India reported.
The financial details of the deal were, however, not disclosed.
"He (Tata) clearly wanted us to launch and grow the network in India first before taking it overseas. Mr Tata's investment in MUrgency will help attract leading talent to the company and major partnerships beyond India," Shaffi Mather, the founder of MUrgency Inc, said in a statement, according to the PTI.
MUrgency is a global mobile app company, which claims to make medical emergency available with one tap on a mobile phone in less than nine minutes in urban areas.
The company has presence in Mumbai, Dubai, Singapore, San Fancisco, London and Hong Kong. It has a responder network of 36 hospital emergency rooms, over 40 ambulances and more than 350 medical professionals. The mobile app was launched in the Tricity area in Punjab in February this year and would be launching its services in Amritsar and Jalandhar in the last week of this month.
MUrgency was founded in 2014 by Shaffi Mather and incubated at Stanford ChangeLabs. Based in San Francisco, the company plans to go pan-India by 2018 and worldwide by 2020.
"While our primary goal is to develop emergency medical response network, we are widening our service to be an inclusive and comprehensive medical service platform on your mobile phone. The app is live on iOS and Android app stores and several features are accessible across the world already," Sweta Mangal, director, global emergency response, MUrgency, was quoted by PTI as saying.
MUrgency is currently available for users on Android and iOS. It has won Startup Grind's Golden Gavel Award, Startup of the Year 2016 award, as well as the SXSW Accelerator contest in health and wearable technologies, among others. It has also raised funding from Axilor Ventures, an early stage entrepreneur fund, according to techinasia.com.
In emergency situations, MUrgency can help with providing ambulances or booking home health services from a nurse or a physician. It also helps patients book appointments and chat with doctors.
