The day that millions of Rajinikanth's fans and well-wishers were expecting is here as the Tamil superstar is set to join politics, finally.The actor has announced on Friday, 31 March, that he is ready to take a plunge by joining the BJP.
Rajinikanth, who is currently busy with his upcoming movie 2.0, opened up on his political plans at the press conference called late in the evening on Friday (March 31). "I've been thinking of it over a decade. Finally, I have decided to take a plunge. I am inspired by the developmental works carried out by the Narendra Modi's government. Hence, I have decided to help the 'lotus' bloom in Tamil Nadu," Rajinikanth said in the press meet.
Rajinikanth's political ambitions have also been shrouded in mystery. Although he appeared interested in politics in the early 90s and had extended support to the various parties on different occasions, the Tamil superstar kept has himself away from it since 2000. Whenever the question of joining politics arose, he responded to it by saying he has left on God to decide it.
So, what made him take a plunge into politics now? "I admit that I have been hesitant to join politics to some extent. But looking at the present situation in Tamil Nadu, I feel I should not shy away from taking up the opportunity to serve the people in a bigger away. Neither I am hungry for power nor I am here to make money. My sole intention is to develop Tamil Nadu as a model state in India," Rajinikanth adds.
The superstar claims that he is unlikely to continue acting as he wants to be a full-time politician from now on.
Hailing Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Rajinikanth said: "He will go down in the history as one of our finest prime ministers. We are fortunate to have such an inspiring leader who leads by an example."
Rajinikanth said he will join the BJP on April 14 on the occasion of Tamil New Year in the presence of Modi. It has to be seen whether he will campaign for BJP's candidate Gangai Amaran for the forthcoming by-election in RK Nagar constituency which fell vacant after the death of J Jayalalithaa, the chief minister of the state, in December last year.
