A 14-year-old girl was reportedly gang-raped and set ablaze by three people in Rajasthan's Sri Ganganagar district on Friday. The victim is in a critical but stable condition, a police officer was quoted as saying by the Times of India.
"The girl says that she had gone to the rooftop of her house around 11 pm for some work. Three youths who were on the rooftop of an adjacent house climbed over to her home and then overpowered her. They then gang-raped her," said a police officer. Around 5 a.m. on Friday, the culprits dragged the girl out of her room and set her ablaze.
The three accused, Sonu, Vijay and Vikki, are on the run and a search for them is underway.
The police also said that the girl was afraid to tell her grandparents, who were sleeping in the house, about the rape.
After heraing her cries, the girl's aunt reached the spot and rushed her to a nearby hospital. Her aunt lived in the same neighbourhood in Rawla Mandi. The girl was referred to Bikaner Hospital after being admitted to a hospital in Rawla.
"She is under observation of a team of doctors. We have launched a search for the three accused as they are missing since the incident was reported to the police," said the officer.
According to the National Crime Records Bureau data, at least three cases of rape with minors are reported in Rajasthan every day.
Meanwhile, at least 900 cases of rape of minors and 600 sexual assault cases are reported annually in Rajasthan.
