Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Monday began his two-day tour of poll-bound Madhya Pradesh by offering prayers at the famous Maa Peetambara Peeth temple complex.
Gandhi reached Datia district in the morning by a helicopter from Gwalior. He then went to the temple complex where he offered prayers to the deity and stayed at the 'shaktipeeth' for about half-an-hour.
State Congress president Kamal Nath and senior party leader Jyotiraditya Scindia accompanied him. Scindia introduced priests and other members of the temple trust to Gandhi.
At the poll rally, the Congress chief attacked the BJP and said, 'Modi ji gave the slogan 'Beti Bachao Beti Padhao'. We liked the slogan but then a BJP MLA raped someone. The CM tried to shield him, PM didn't expel him from the party. He never spoke about it. The actual slogan is 'Beti Padhao aur Beti ko BJP ke MLA se bachao.'
He also said that 'PM has no room in his heart for oppressed & women. He has room only for industrialists. Mehul Bhai, Nirav Bhai, Anil Bhai, Lalit Bhai, he never calls farmers and labourers 'Bhai'. Have you ever heard Modi ji calling poor 'Bhai'? Never. If he isn't in suit-boot, he isn't 'Bhai'.
Elections will be held in Madhya Pradesh on November 28.
Many political bigwigs have visited the shrine in the past, state Congress spokesman Pankaj Chaturvedi told PTI.
"Indira Gandhi (Rahul Gandhi's grandmother) visited the shrine in 1979, before polls in 1980 and later after becoming the prime minister. Later, Rajiv Gandhi (the Congress chief's father) also paid a visit to the shaktipeeth after becoming PM in 1984-85," he said.
Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje Scindia is the chairperson of the Peetambara Trust, that manages the affairs of the shrine.
Chaturvedi also recalled when the then prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru had fallen very sick, senior Congress leader Kamlapati Tripathi organised a special 'puja' for his recovery there.
