Manchester City have moved to second place in the Premier League table with an impressive 2-1 win over Arsenal at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday. They showed great character and also aggression in the second half to script two goals and emerge victorious after going a goal down in the first 45 minutes.
Overall, it was City, who enjoyed great possession, and deservedly won the match. Leroy Sane and Raheem Sterling scored the goal for the home side.
The match did not initially get off to a great start for City as Arsenal scored from their first attack with Alexis Sanchez providing a wonderful pass for Theo Walcott, who found the back of the net in the fifth minute. That was a goal of the highest order, which initially started with Arsenal goalkeeper Petr Cech releasing a quick ball.
Manchester City, immediately, got a huge chance to draw level but Sterling somehow missed an easy header from close range.
That goal got both teams, especially Manchester City, playing with great intensity with the home team keen to score the all-important equaliser. Despite City enjoying great possession, they did not have anything to show for their efforts. In fact, they looked below par in the final third, but the home team did apply some pressure on the Arsenal defenders, who stood firm.
City, with good possession in the first 45 minutes, should have scored a goal at least, but the Citizens did not take much time to get in the scoresheet during the second half, as Sane scored in the 47th minute. It was a cool finish from Sane after the overhead pass from Silva over Arsenal defenders.
The home team looked a quality side, enjoying possession on both sides of the flanks. City fans were also making huge noise in the crowd as their players looked a constant threat throughout the half with Sane being instrumental, using his pace and clever movement. He got another chance to help his team take lead, but Cech rushed out of his line to make a fine save and keep it 1-1 in the 62nd minute.
City players looked threatening with the ball on their feet, and Cech was once again called into action but the goalkeeper made a decent save from Kevin De Bruyne's deflected shot. But the Arsenal man was beaten a few minutes later as Sterling scored a wonderful goal in the 72nd minute to make it 2-1.
With Arsenal in need of the equaliser, Arsene Wenger brought in Olivier Giroud, but City nearly scored another after a good play in the right. De Bruyne hit the outside of the post from close range. Though Arsenal gave it their all in the last 20 minutes or so, they were not able to score that goal, which would have helped them earn, at least, one point.
