Film posters give us a rough idea of what is to come, and almost always it's of crucial importance that it click with the audience. While some connect, others land themselves in controversy.

The year gone by had some visually stunning posters which really showed the teams' efforts. But some were a written off as rip-offs.

Baahubali – The Beginning

Over a span of few months, the makers of this magnum opus released posters with the film's lead actors. The ones with Prabhas and Rana Daggubati went viral for the grandeur, but the one with the baby held up by a hand attached to a body immersed in water was what grabbed eyeballs for its eerie resemblance to the 1998 comedy-drama "Simon Birch".

Bajrangi Bhaijaan

The half-look poster caught everyone's attention, and the spotlight was on Salman Khan's locket in the shape of Lord Hanuman's club. Later, the makers released one in which the superstar was seen giving his little co-star Harshaali Malhotra a piggyback ride.

Dil Dhadakne Do

These people hit the right chord with their supremely mysterious first-look poster in which the Mehras — played by Anil Kapoor, Shefali Shah, Priyanka Chopra and Ranveer Singh — were seen enjoying a sunbath facing away from the camera.

Raees

A bespectacled and bearded Shah Rukh Khan wearing a pathani kurta and sitting upright on a chair in a room with liquor bottles. There could not have been a better poster this year.

Sultan

Salman Khan sporting a handle-bar moustache and a crew cut. Fierce and intense, his fans haven't quite gotten over the awesomeness of this poster.

Prem Ratan Dhan Payo

There was nothing creative about Salman pretending to write on Sonam Kapoor's back with a quill while she lay on a crazily curvaceous sofa. But, obviously it was all about Prem and he had returned in his goody-two-shoes avatar.

Phantom

This thriller-drama got into trouble for having its lead stars — Katrina Kaif and Saif Ali Khan — pose for a poster in which they were blindfolded with the Indian flag. This, and also how it was copied from a Hollywood film poster.

Dangal

Aamir Khan's face photo-shopped onto a mud pot was insanely trolled on social media.
