Luv Ranjan's comedy film "Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2" (PKP2) has surprised everyone with its opening weekend box office performance.
The comedy drama outperformed several movies, featuring known stars, released this year.
"Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2" was released in around 1,400 screens in India on 16 October. The film opened with occupancy of around 45%, which is good since the movie was not promoted heavily.
The film had a spectacular opening of Rs 6.80 crore and continued its winning streak on the second day. The film showed 11% rise in its second day box office collection.
The second day box office collection of "Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2" is Rs 7.60 crore and on the third day the film minted approximately Rs 8 crore.
"#PyaarKaPunchnama2 has a ROCKING Day 3 [Sunday]. Early estimates: approx ₹ 8 cr+. Weekend total: ₹ 22.40 cr+. SUPERB," trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted.
The film shattered the opening weekend records of Sooraj Pancholi-Athiya Shetty starrer "Hero", which earned Rs 21.10 crore.
The film has earned twice the lifetime box office collection amount of its prequel "PKP" (Rs 9 crore) in its opening weekend.
The target audience of "Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2" is youngsters and looks like it has connected with its target audience well. Also, the reviews, which are mostly positive, and word of mouth have helped the film's business grow.
Directed by Luv, the film shows the flipside of romance. "Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2" is about three friends who face problems because of their demanding girlfriends.
The film has Nushrat Bharucha, Sonali Sehgall, Ishita Sharma and lead actor Kartik Aryan reprising their roles in the sequel, while two debutantes Sunny Singh and Omkar Kapoor, respectively, have replaced Raayo S Bakhirta and Divyendu Sharma.
