The year 2016 has been amazing for PV Sindhu. She won silver in Rio Olympics, emerged victorious at the China Open and finished runners-up at the Hong Kong Open last month. She has been one of the most improved players in the circuit, as shown by her game on the court, and Sindhu will be eager to finish the year with a bang in the ongoing BWF World Super Series Finals.
Sindhu has already booked a semifinals berth in the competition, which is an achievement as the shuttler defeated top players like Akane Yamaguchi and Carolina Marin to reach the last four. But Sindhu is not yet done, as she will be keen to reach the final. South Korean Sung Ji Hyun stands in her way in the semifinals, scheduled for Saturday.
The Indian shuttler may not have even made it to the competition, where only top shuttlers feature, but her performance in China and Hong Kong in November paved the way for her in the BWF Super Series Finals.
Her journey in the competition has been brilliant, but there is a serious need for her to be consistent in the match against Sung Ji, who comes into this clash with victories against Ratchanak Intanon, He Bingjiao and the world number one, Tai Tzu Ying.
The South Korean player, with such impressive wins under her belt, will be confident. Her win against Tai Tzu will give her immense confidence ahead of the clash with Sindhu. Since both Sindhu and Sung Ji are explosive players, one can expect an array of smashes and some brilliant shuttle play at the net in the semifinals.
The two players have faced one another four times already this season, and this will be their fifth head-to-head encounter. Sindhu has been impressive against Sung Ji in 2016, winning three of the four matches, including the last two in Malaysia and China Open.
