Arya, Vijay Sethupathi, Shaam and Karthika Nair starrer "Purampokku Engira Podhuvudamai" is off to a good start at the box office. The Tamil movie opened to positive reviews from critics and audience.
"Purampokku Engira Podhuvudamai" has raked in ₹5.1 crore (nett.) in the opening weekend and leading trade tracker and critic Sreedhar Pillai confirmed the same on Twitter.
"#PurampokkuEngiraPodhuvudamai Nets Rs 5.10 Cr (approx) for May 15 to 17 Weekend. Rains ate into B-O in south TN," he wrote.
Trade experts say that "Purampokku Engira Podhuvudamai" was affected in the southern part of Tamil Nadu due to heavy rains. As a result, the audience turnout for the film in many theatres was lesser than expected. Nonetheless, the film's performance is highly commendable considering there is no A-list actor in the cast. In Chennai alone, the film raked in ₹69.62 lakh in the opening weekend. The film had 177 shows in the city.
Notably, the simultaneous release of Jyothika's comeback movie "36 Vayadhinile" had some impact on the movie collection. This film gave good competition to "Purampokku Engira Podhuvudamai" at various centres and multiplexes.
However, as the film has got good word-of-mouth, the collection of the flick is expected to improve in the coming days. The response for the film is decent in international circuits like US and Malaysia as well.
"Purampokku Engira Podhuvudamai" is directed by SP Jananathan and produced by UTV Motion Pictures. The film has Varshan's music, NK Ekambaram's cinematography, and N Ganesh Kumar's editing.
The subject of "Purampokku Engira Podhuvudamai" is about the relevance of capital punishment in the legal system. The director has interwoven his message with a commercial angle through alleged terrorist Bala (Arya), Macualay (Shaam), hangman Vijay Setuhpathi and Bala's friend Karthika Nair.
