A class 12 student in Kahnuwan town of Punjab suffered severe burnt injuries after two men had allegedly thrown acid on her on 5 March.

An NDTV report cited the police as saying that the two men, who were behind the crime, were arrested on Thursday. The duo, identified as Manpreet Singh and his friend Ajit, are residents of Paiowali village in Amritsar.

The duo had splashed acid on the victim, while she was on her way back home from her board examination. The victim, who is a national-level netball player, has sustained 60% burnt injuries.

Gurpreet Singh Toor, SSP of Gurdaspur, told media that the crime was the result of an outburst after repeated failed attempts to entice the girl.

He also added that an acid bottle and a bike, which were used in the crime, have been recovered.

Meanwhile, Punjab Education Minister Daljit Singh Cheema, calling the act extremely disgraceful, ordered the Punjab School Education Board to conduct special exams for the victim after her complete recovery.

He also assured the girl's brother of every possible help from the side of the state government and the education department.
