Ilayathalapathy Vijay's "Puli" has not lived up to the expectations at the Chennai box office. As a result, the movie -- which was expected to set fresh records at the collection centres -- has only made a decent business in the Capital city of Tamil Nadu.
By the end of its ninth weekend, "Puli" had earned Rs 5.07 crore and it had nine shows. After making a stunning business in the first weekend, where it earned Rs 2.84 crore from 465+ shows, it has failed to keep the momentum and post a big total.
The fans of Vijay were at least hoping that "Puli" would beat "Yennai Arindhaal" record of Rs 5.72 crore. We have to wait and see whether the film can surpass the collection made by Ajith's movie.
Vijay's best performance at Chennai box office till date is "Kaththi", which had collected Rs 7.83 crore. His other movie, "Jilla", had grossed Rs 5.68 crore.
Also, "Puli" has failed to surpass the collection of some of the biggest hits like Vikram's "I" (Rs 9.68 crore), "Baahubali" (Rs 8.40 crore), Dhanush's "Velaiyilla Pattathari" (Rs.6.66 crore), Raghava Lawrence's "Kanchana 2" (Rs.6.27 crore), and Ajith's "Veeram" (Rs.6.14 crore).
In the coming weeks, "Puli" might not find place in theatres due to the Diwali releases. Ajith's "Vedalam" and Kamal Haasan starrer "Thoongavanam" are releasing in many screens. Hence, Vijay's film has to make way for those films.
"Puli" is a fantasy-adventure written and directed by Chimbu Deven. It is bankrolled by PT Selvakumar and Shibu Thameens, who have reportedly spent over Rs 100 crore on the project. Kiccha Sudeep, Shruthi Haasan, Sridevi Kapoor and Hansika Motwani are also part of the cast.
The worldwide gross collection has crossed Rs 100 crore (estimated business).
