U Mumba recorded a convincing victory against Bengaluru Bulls in the Pro Kabaddi League at the Thyagaraj Stadium in Delhi on Tuesday.
However, they will probably have to make do without the services of star raider Shabeer Bapu Sharfudheen for the rest of the tournament, after he injured his knee badly while mounting a raid.
In the battle between the table toppers, U Mumba beat Bangalore 45-34. Launching early attacks has been Mumbai's usual strategy. However, for once they began in a careful manner, hoping to gauge the line of attack of Bangalore. The Bulls also decided to wait and watch as the boys from Mumbai did come with a reputation of going all out from the very beginning.
Both teams waited for the other to make a mistake. U Mumba then took the bull by the horns and started playing in their usual gung-go manner.
U Mumba went on the attack in the eighth minute as raider Sharfudheen launched the first attack. This move by the team's star raider killed two birds with one stone as it ensured that Mumbai had scored and Bangalore's key man Ajay Thakur sat out of the game for some time.
Thakur's presence would have been dangerous as he could have mounted attacks for the Bulls. Mumbai skipper Anup Kumar then followed it up with a foray of his own.
With the score 16-8 in U Mumba's favour, a green card came Manjit Chillar's way as he was booked for a foul. Thakur had come back and tried his best to keep the Bulls level with U Mumba but even he could not. Mumbai seemed to be running away with the game as they led 23-13 at the interval.
U Mumba continued their dominance in the second half, although Bulls' skipper Chillar tried his best to keep his team in the game. He, however, could not succeed. Mumbai did not let Sharfudheen's injury deter them as Kumar and Rishank Devadiga delivered and ensured the side emerged victorious.
The Best Defender award went to Vishal Mane of U Mumba, while skipper Kumar was the Star Raider.
